AR15.COM

A question for the IT buffs.

I have a spanking new laptop but it won't talk to www.AR15.COM, which is of course unacceptable. It will talk to other gun sites so it's not that. Do I have to change some settings or get one of those proxy server things?

Talk slowly with short words and preferably pictures please because I am really stupid

can you ping www.ar15.com?

I will assume you are running a Windows OS, so click START - RUN then type CMD.  You should now see a nice black window with white writing.  at the c:\> prompt type ping www.ar15.com

You should get a response like this
64 bytes from host-69-95-2-67.roc.choiceone.net (69.95.2.67): icmp_seq=7 ttl=245 time=93.9 ms
64 bytes from host-69-95-2-67.roc.choiceone.net (69.95.2.67): icmp_seq=8 ttl=245 time=95.9 ms
64 bytes from host-69-95-2-67.roc.choiceone.net (69.95.2.67): icmp_seq=9 ttl=245 time=93.4 ms
64 bytes from host-69-95-2-67.roc.choiceone.net (69.95.2.67): icmp_seq=10 ttl=245 time=93.5 ms
64 bytes from host-69-95-2-67.roc.choiceone.net (69.95.2.67): icmp_seq=11 ttl=245 time=94.6 ms

If you get Destination Unreachable or Request Timed Outed, it's possible your ISP does not have a route to AR15.com and is in effect blocking it.

Also try putting 69.95.2.67 in your browsers address bar instead of www.ar15.com and see if that displays anything.

Hello, my name is 'Bob' - I'm your tech support guy from Bangalore

There have been issues with AR15.com access from some UK internet suppliers (now finally resolved for mine). If it works from other machines your running from the same home internet connection then you know its not the internet supplier.

So - does it work from other machines on the same connection ?

Yep, although that one is hard wired whereas the laptop is via a wireless router if that makes any difference?

Is your laptop with wireless using the same router (and therefore ISP) as the hard-wired machines ? (ie you aren't using a broadband dongle on the new laptop from another ISP such as orange/CPW for example?)

If the answer is YES to the first question, then I'm confused too...

I've been posting on airgunbbs for a while and IcarusY625 suggested I join AR15.com because I am just getting into AR-15s (although I have had a FAC for some time).

Additionally Mr Bradley is about to build me a rimfire M4 carbine

Unfortunately in order to pay for shooting I have to work - and unfortunately I earn my corn as an IT consultant...

BTW I like guns a hell of a lot more than computers!

Neither of these work. My ISP can't be blocking it as I am using it now. I lost it for a while some time ago and had to change my security settings (I think) to get it back. I've tried to match the security settings on my desktop to my new laptop but there is a lot more stuff on my laptop and i don't know what should be enable, disable or prompt...

Well I've tried connecting the laptop directly to the router and I still can't get ARfcom so it must be the security settings on the laptop. It's heading for the hard basket...........

I have this problem with my laptop running a 3 dongle. pinging returns with time out and 100% data loss, ip numbers come up with google search page. I have to use proxy server to get arfcom however, is there a way that I can make 3 let me access arfcon direct?

Ok, so I have Firefox, but I still don't have ar15.com. It says this:

Connection Interrupted

The document contains no data

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

That sounds like a connectivity problem - can you connect any other machines?

If not, try deleting all of your cookies (and I don't mean eat a packet of maryland!); then try connecting again.

I only use Firefox - IE is too open to attack - and most of the teenage dateless wonders who spend all of their time trying to break computers like to attack Microsoft..

My desktop uses IE without any problems. My laptop can't get ar15.com through either browser, so does that point to settings on the laptop?

Ok, all cookies deleted......................and now I can't load Firefox either

If neither browser is working - it is a connectivity problem; almost certainly brought about by your firewall (if you can access ar15.com from another machine) - are you using Microsoft's firewall?

Deleting the cookies should not break Firefox - What does Firefox say when it refuses to open?

Firefox is back.

Both browser's will work, just neither will let me load ar15.com. I am using the firewall provided by my internet security package which is AVG. Should I be looking for something here?

Have you tried using a proxy?

From having a quick look on google I found this on another forum:

I couldn't get into Paypal and this was the answer.
Go to Windows\system32\drivers\etc (yes etc is a folder) and use Notepad to open up the file "hosts", you should find very little...just 127.0.0.1 localhost. I found a whole list of Paypal URLs which should not have been there. I deleted them, saved the file and all was well. How they got in there and why is a mystery...but it did work. All that is there now is 127.0.0.1 localhost which is all there should be.

I wouldn't start deleting things randomly - however if there are links to AR15.com in that file then I would make a back up of the file and then try removing them and see if that fixes it

Try access through this site

Linky

If this works then its your ISP's local proxy cache. Good luck in getting them to admit it though

OK; no problem.

Go to the folder C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc in windows explorer

There you should find a file called "hosts", it will be of type "FILE"
Right click on the file and select "open with" (or "open" if "open with" isn't there). Select Notepad (which should have a little blue icon)

When it opens, it should appear something like:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost

Don't change anything at this point. If it is the same as the above file; then fine. If not, then copy and paste it into your reply.

Just one thing to eliminate...

Also, can you open the site through a proxy?
