I moved up here in May and bird hunting season snuck up on me. Dove is open, teal opens on Saturday. Later this fall it looks like some upland species open up as well as duck and goose. I grew up in the southwest with a ton of public land and really never had to worry about finding places to shoot birds. How does public land access work in Ohio? I'm in Dayton, I see there are a few wildlife areas within an hour of me where the state manages dove fields and the land holds some other species as well. It also looks like the state requires a permit for controlled hunts in these areas, does that mean they aren't open to anyone all the time? And are these controlled hunts for the entire season or just select days? I'd love to go shoot at some dove this weekend, but I'm confused on what public land I can hunt on and when. The same goes for chasing quail, chukar, and pheasant later in the year. |

I used to hunt westbranch state park for waterfowl. We either hunted from the boat, or got a blind in the drawing. It can be hit/miss. Since they changes the blind drawings it's been a complete bust. Lately it has been hunting private land over a few ponds with some friends. Its enough for me at the moment. You can also hunt for deer, dove and pheasant at the state parks per the park's rules. Check online. There are usually 2 pheasant releases, it can be worth it to get out that week and walk the fields. |
