Didn't see anything specific in Equipment/Accessories?etc. etc. forums, thought maybe one of you cheap bastages like myself has done something. Problem: Added VFG to my cheap (but very light) Tapco hand guards. I don't like the flex, but don't want to upgrade to a super-duper-free-floating-quad-tac-rail system just yet. Has anybody beefed up their stock hand guards for this application. Some ideas I've come up with in the 10 minutes of thought I've put to this: a.) Ensure the mounting hardware is tight, and fill the lower handguard with some hard drying epoxy. that should limit the flex. b.) Put a longer "add-a rail" (currently a 2 or 3"er, just long enough to mount the Grip). This entails buying something else. c.) d.) find some nice, black duct tape and wrap the crap out of the handguards. They're going away eventually anyway. ![]() Thanks in advance. |
B (Otherwise get a rail system) |

Get a better set of handguards not a set made from melted and molded wonderbread wrappers Example www.cavalryarms.com/C3.html |
Is this for your AR??? If it is... WHY DID YOU NOT CALL ME YOU DOUCHE? Both my bushmaster and LMT have Knights RAS kits. They are drop in rails with VFG's, you know you are more than welcome to road test either. While the KAC kits are a bit expensive, there is a member here who sells them for a really good deal and worth every penny in my opinion. ** Walker is a personal homie, road testing not open to all, sorry suck wads! ** |
Do note, on my behalf, I did say I didn't want the super-duper rail system.."just yet". I'm starting to think that "yet" is approaching. And the KAC kit is at the top of my wish list.. I just... one other project I want to get,,,operational,, before buying furniture for a weapon that works. Thank you all for your comments, and to clarify my epoxy idea. I would paint in on back side of the plastic, leaving the ventilation holes unobstructed, and plenty of clearance to the heat shield. I'm going to pull the guards off, and take a better look to see if there is a safe way to do that. If not... Hmm, puyalap shows right around the corner... |

Step 1 get used and abused old school FF tube from one of us. Step 2 borrow installation tools from one of us. Step 3 install FF tube. Step 4 weld/screw/bolt/rivit JB weld rail to bottom of said old school FF tube. Step 5 install vert grip. wrap tube w/550 chord, optional. Step 6 pay for tube and tool "rental" in BEER. | The Surfire rails, while not free floating (and really, do you need to shoot minute of angle at 600 meters?) are nice, mount very solidly, and are amongst the most inexspensive rail systems available. Right around a hundred I'd guess. The only potential negative that comes immediately to mind is that the top rail is lower than the rail of a flat top upper receiver, so you can't mount an optic that coversboth the receiver and the rail. I have a set of these on my Bushmaster M4, and will probably go with them for whatever I get next. I like the fact that they are lighter than the KAC rails too. |
No need to get super duper free float... MI or YHM, or one of those has a drop in for ~$100 (maybe $120) that simply replaces the handguards... Stokes has the RAS kits for $205 (shipped) with the VFG and rail pannels on the EE (if he still has them)... |
