Most states now forbid it. So does Washington. However, there is a law here that states
if you wear hearing aids, you are exempt from the law. Meaning, you can talk and drive
at the same time.

I guess it has to do with not being able to use a hands free device safely.

I was wondering if Ca. has a similar law as I might be driving thru the state to get to
Nevada. I'll probably have my G19 under the seat and really don't want to do anything
that will attract the cops.

Any LEO's know about this?

Not a cop. This is from the DMV. I haven't found an exemption for hearing aids.

eta In paragraph b they list "base" fines starting at $20.00.  LOL, no.  I know the actual fine is WAY higher.  Probably local enforcement add ons or fees. I've never gotten a ticket for it but know several people who have and I'm remembering somewhere around $160.00.

Not LEO, but G19 under the seat is illegal.  cannot have a concealed weapon without a permit or an exception.

ironically, G19 on the seat, in plain view, is not illegal.  it is not concealed.  unloaded of course.

stay off the phone, you should be OK, but where will you be driving that you feel the need to illegally pack heat?  CA is very safe outside certain urban centers, where I doubt you will be anyways.

That's not open carry?

So I can carry my unloaded Glock on the seat but I can't carry it on my belt?

That sounds like open carry to me.

Can I bring my Kabar? Or is that against the law too?

My mom always told me its better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Understood. Just don't get caught.

This is CA of course, so common sense and common law don't always apply.  But staying out of bad areas and not driving in a manner that will attract official attention are the two biggest things that will make a CA trip successful.

TV and movies not withstanding, crime is not rampant in most areas.  Carrying long guns unloaded and visible is legal, I'm pretty sure pistols need to be in a locked container not available to the driver.

On a practical note, what do you do with an open pistol when you stop?  take it and put it in a case and then lock the case in the trunk??  That's a lot of visibility to me.

God, I hate to leave it at home. I guess once I'm out of Washington, I can throw it in the trunk
And only take it out if I end up in a "rest stop" at night.
Is my knife ok?

Shit, can I even bring my cane?

Knife should be okay.  Unfortunately you need to look it up at the top of the HTF to verify all of the rules.  I don't carry a sheath knife daily, just a folder.

Cane is good.  Unless it's a sword cane.

This attorney gives a good brief on CA laws regarding transportation of firearms: http://www.gunlaw.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=97

Out of state license plate means cops wont care about you, at least in my area of Orange County. Still though be careful about carrying the gun, and it was probably a bad idea to post that your were going to do something illegal on a forum.

O yea you are gtg with a bluetooth headset, my dad uses one all the time.
