Does anyone know a good place where one can shop locally for
used computer equipment?(Off lease, recycled, demos etc)

Looking for a monitor, and maybe some old RAM.
Also looking for a copy of XP Home/Pro operating system locally.

Just putting a computer together for my kid to pound on.

THis would the CHicago area, Northwest, North suburbs.

I have a Dell L1000R  Latitude that is relatively new...just sat in a closet all these years.
I think it uses PC133 SDRAM....128Meg.  Prefer 256Meg.
It's got Win98SE but would like to see if XP will work.
I also have an HP cpu that I am screwing with.

I have nothing lined up...going to go thru the yellow pages tonight.

microcenter is usually where i would go, but most independant places are quite unreputable.
i have a corporated edition of ms office and usually a reboot disk from any computer will work to install msxp.

If it can be a tube, I have a 21" trinitron you can have.
If you get a Dell, I have xp install disks that they ship with.  They re-image the systems here at work when they come in and toss the disks.
ETA: I have a friend who does industrial surplus, if you don't have something lined up now I can give him a call and see what he's got.

Ruso,

Where are you located?

I'm in Bolingbrook, and I've been professionally building and repairing computers for 13 years now.

I have a couple small desktops that I rebuild and sell to families (typically around X-mas) for just what you are looking for.

It will be fully gone over, and a fresh (legal) copy of Windows on it. I may also have a spare 15" flat panel for cheap to go along with it.

If that sounds like what you're looking for, E-mail me at [email protected] and I'd be glad to help out. If you aren't too far from me, I could even swing by and hook it up for you.

~Eric~

Thanks....looking at a flat panel.

I do have a Dell....but nothing going right now.  Just looking around
for spare parts.  Mostly RAM and monitor.

XP OS if I can get to play with...but not a priority.

I have a cd burner if you want it.  I think it is 40x.  Free for the taking.  I did find an xp pro disk in my garage the other day.  It has a legit key and all that.  You can have it if you want.  I just don't know where I got it from or how many times it has been installed.  It isn't the same key that I am running on my system.

Well if it runs 98, you will probably need to jack the ram to 512meg at a minimum other than that, I have a PCI express card just sitting around doing nothing and I might have a AMD processor socket 939 that needs a home as well if I can find it.
