Can I have a handgun LOOSE in my truck, legally? For instance, can I toss it on my seat beside me, or have it on the dash, or have it on my center console, legally?
Note: I HAVE a CCW permit. |

Yes you can, with a valid license. It's not safe, in case of a panic stop or accident, to have a loose handgun flying around inside a vehicle, so I don't ever do so... but it is legal. |

The only statutes which apply to handguns and vehicles driving down the street are 941.23 and 948.605 since 167.31 exempts handguns loaded or otherwise. Your license exempts you from 941.23 and 948.605 so long as you are driving down the street and not onto the grounds of a school. |

If you keep it up on your dash, I would suggest keeping your windows up so it doesn't go sliding out. Also, when it slides of your seat/center console, don't be like one of those idiots that reach for it while driving down the road like a CD. Wait to get it at the next stop light/sign.
All kidding aside. I normally put mine in between the seat and center console. I thought about riveting a cheaper holster into the console. But may get a new vehicle soon so I decided against it. |

You don't need rivets if you've got a spare kydex holster that fits your pistol. You can use that 3M double sided tape. The stuff that's grey in color with a red film. I've got an open storage compartment in the "doghouse" of my Ford E250 cargo van. I stuck a cheap Uncle Mikes kydex holster to the inside top of the storage compartment last March, and a Glock 19 has been in it ever since.... with full weight hanging from the top. It sticks very good if you heat both parts with a heatgun or blow dryer first, and apply while still hot. If your console is plastic, you can stick a kydex holster to the side with that tape, and you can remove it when you sell the vehicle. "Goo-gone" will remove any tape residue. |

Yeah, that tape works very well. My wife put up some decorations on my daughters walls with it. You should see what that stuff does to drywall when you pull it off....

She pulled one off, saw the damage, and stopped... left it to me to remove the rest. If you can seperate the decoration from the tape (I used a long filet knife) and leave the tape on the wall, you can get it off, without too much damage, with a heat gun and an old credit card for a scraper, then some goo-gone. It's time consuming and tedious, but better than patching the drywall.
Something I forgot in my earlier post... clean both parts to be taped together with some rubbing alcohol. |
