I'm getting my CCL sometime this fall and i have the legal option to apply for one in the state of florida (or so i've read and been told). My main concern is that the sherrif's departments in CO have the option of registering me in the CBI's computer database as having a CCL, while such a practice is illegal in Florida.

I have also heard that due to a lawsuit this practice should be abolished in 2007. Does anyone have any info about this? any links? I'm eager to figure this whole thing out.

Yes they can put your name in a database and yes that will stop in 07.  From what I'm told you're just identified as a CCL holder.  If the cop treats you differantly than he was probably an asshole to begin with.  FL CCLs are cheaper and they take less time to process.  The only reason I went ahead and did the CO CCL is convenience and to support my state.

So, if i get a CO one before they stop putting them in the computer will they take my name out when they stop?

Get the FL permit.  Don't let your name be entered into "the machine".  C'mon dude, you've heard the Pink Floyd song.  Right on, far out, kick it with a tasty groove, and so forth.

Here's what i got in an email from the guys at packing.org.

"Florida will only recognize a non-resident permit if you are a resident
of that state.  In other words, you are a colorado resident.  Florida
will only recognize you if you have a Colorado permit.  If you have
any other state, Florida does not recognize it as you are not a
resident of that issuing state.

Now, Michigan and New Hampshire are the same.  So, if you get a
Florida permit, it would not be valid in those states as you are
not a Florida resident.  But, a Florida permit would be valid with
your Colorado Drivers License in the other states that have
reciprocity with Florida, such as Utah, Texas, etc. "

I don't understand what that means.

This isn't rocket science,
licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/license/forms.html

Hit the above linked, fill in your mailing information and select the conceal weapon or firearm application in the first box, and hit submit.

In about a week, you will receive a pamphlet on how fill out the forms, a return mailing envelope, the application form, a finger print card, and a form on Florida electronic finger printing (just disregard that form since you are not in Florida to take advantage of it).

Now fill out the application form, and take it down to your bank to have it notarized.

Next stop is at a copy store to have a copy of your hunter safety card made for the permit application and put it into the envelope.

Next hit a Walgreen’s or post office and have then take/print a Pass passport photo of you.  Lightly write your name and date of birth on the back, and put it into the envelope.

From there check with the local LEO departments for when they do finger printing, and go down to have them print you to the card.
Note: Double-check everything on the finger print card to make sure its fill out (pisses me off they make you pay for the finger printing (like $25 at most departments) and don't even take the time to fill it out for you, so read the pamphlet to use the correct codes on the card when you fill it out).

From there, its just drop a check for $117 into envelope, mail it off and wait.
Items that will be in the envelope,
Application form filled out and notarized,
Copy of your Hunter safety card,
Passport photo with your name and birth date on the back
Finger print card done and completely filled out where needed.
Check for $117.
That is all you need, and will send to them.

Bottom line is if you plan everything correctly, you can get the forms filled out and ready in about an hour once you receive them.

P.S. Screw the CO CCW since the Fl CCW covers you here in CO. If you want all of the Reciprociting states, then you would need a Utah CCW as well.  Also, check the Fl Reciprocity map so know which states are legal.  States like CA are not covered as Reciprocity states, and would require another state issued permit to carry there.

A florida permit won't be good in Florida if you have a CO Drivers License to show. and acording to state law you have to surrender your other DL from other states to get a CO DL. It won't be good in MI or NH either.

licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/concealed_carry.html

(4) Florida issues concealed carry licenses to qualified individuals regardless of whether or not they are Florida residents. MICHIGAN and NEW HAMPSHIRE will honor the Florida license ONLY IF the license holder is a legal resident of Florida.

As for Florida not honoring it's own non-resident state licenses in Florida, this is a new one on me (Yes I have been stopped/checked and given my out of state DVR and FL permit in FL with no problems).

You might want to email them back and have them point out the rule number/law that states were FL will not honor it’s own state issued licenses in state (resident or not).

so a hunter safety course car will work for proof of competence?
