So let me give you a little background.

I live and go to school in NYC. A few months after Obama won the 2008 election, I asked my sister if she wanted to buy an AR-15, as I wasn't old enough at the time. She says sure, and agrees to take title to it until I was of age, at which point it'd be mine. I found that Long Island Shooting Center had facilities for storing firearms, so I think great, it can be kept there until such a time when I can move out and/or manage to land a job in law enforcement. We paid $100 for it to be transferred from LMT to them and $10 for each month it's there.

Because life got in the way, I didn't find an opportunity to go out and shoot it often. As many of you know, it's only a 50' range, it's not pleasant to shoot .223 indoors, and the fee for the rifle stations aren't cheap. When I asked if I may bring it to the outdoor public range down the street, they said no. My sister and I fell behind in the storage fees, but we never received a call from them. It doesn't mean it's okay, but we didn't make time to get out there.

This morning, my sister says she's driving a friend of the family out to a Wal-Mart and the friend wants to stop by the range shoot. I think great, an opportunity to school a 2A-uninitiated acquaintance and pay the fees. So we arrive, and the convo with the guy behind the counter (I don't see the guy I normally saw) goes something like this––

[Me] I'm storing a rifle here and need to pay the fees for it.
[Guy] Come back tomorrow, the store's closed.
[Me] I'm from the city; it was a bit of a trip to get here.
[Guy] You're gonna have to come back tomorrow.
<I must have had a puzzled expression on my face, but I look toward the front door to see where my sister is.>
[Guy] Hey, I'm over here. You going to just stand there and make faces? Unless you have business here, move on.

My sister and her friend arrive; sister talks to the guy for a bit, he repeats come back tomorrow. We leave; the friend doesn't get to shoot.

I know LISC has a reputation for shirking anyone who isn't law enforcement, but after this incident I don't want to deal with them anymore. At the moment I'm trying to get another friend's sibling upstate to get a hold of it, but he hasn't found the time to come down to take a look at it. I don't know what the guy's problem was, but he talked to me like he was a cop and I had commit some heinous crime. I know in regards to the fees, I'm not completely in the right, but considering the time that's passed I doubt he knew. Even then, would this type of treatment be acceptable? I'm not asking for a dance and a musical number, but a little respect would be nice.

Incredible.

How much do you figure you owe them at this point for storage?

Just curious.

[#2]
More than $120––was ready to pay in full plus interest.

So it's been abandoned for over a year?

Hopefully they understand whatever story you bring them and you get your rifle back. I'm not sure of laws and such about this sort of thing but over a year sounds like a long time for you not to make any storage payments or contact them.

I'd be very nice and polite when dealing with whomever it is that you have to deal with out there.

Luck be with you.

Good luck dealing with them....

Bought a lower from them when BHO was elected. It was used but needless to say when I went to change out the stock there was no rear takedown spring, just paper shoved in to hold the detent. That was my last dealing with them.....

You were inside the store when they claimed it was closed?

Sometimes the range side is open and the store side is closed.Good luck, you pretty much left it for a year with the storage fee's unpaid?? Remember it's not their fault it hard for you to go there.

Unless you spend a shit ton of money in there, you won't ever get them to treat you with respect. Even then it's hit or miss. Unless there is an item I can get no where else or they have an arrangement with a company I want to purchase something from, I never go in there. AND, I know one of the owners from back before he owned a stake in the place. He was actually cool back then but now every time I've seen him he acts like he doesn't know me. My buddy goes there because it's very convenient for him to shoot his pistols indoors in the same town in which he resides but not even that would be enough for me to spend money willing in there because of their attitude.

LISC is not an isolated case where there's "Gun Store Attitude", it's frickin' rampant across Long Island. There are very few stores that I've been in that did not have some sort of chip on their shoulders when I was asking questions as a potential customer. I don't look like a dirtbag, either. I'm clean cut. I don't have a week or two's worth of stubble when I'm out in public. I don't wear shabby clothes or anything inappropriate like with foul language or anything like that. I'm always very respectful and smiling. I mean, hey, of course I'm happy, I'm in a gun store shopping.

To name places I've walked out of with a wad of cash in my pocket that I was about to plunk down on some new boomstick;
LISC (Freeman Ave in Islip)
Guns & Ammo (Sunrise Hwy in Bohemia)
Chester's (Ronkonkoma Ave in Ronkonkoma)

I will give this to Chester's, I was in there about a year or two ago and was treated well so maybe it was an off couple days the times I went in there. They didn't have the rifle I was looking for in stock but still treated me well so I didn't even spend any money there and wasn't treated poorly. It's a decision they make to either try to make you their customer or make you someone's else's customer. I understand dealing day in, day out with the "tire kickers" can be frustrating but you never know when that guy with a few grand that he's willing to spend is gonna make your day.

Also, I'll name a few places where I've NEVER been treated poorly.
South Shore Sportsman (Lansdowne Ave in Merrick)
Coliseum Guns (Hempstead Tpke in Uniondale)

It can be done. To be in the gun dealing business doesn't require you to be a dick.

i drove there once well before their advertised closing time.  I got there and there were people inside milling around.  Some guy dressed in biker attire stopped me at the door (unlocked) and said theyre closed in a manner rather rude.  Ok, bye!  First and last dealing with a place like that.

Wow I shoot there and never spent a dime on anything other than range time and targets and they are nice to me

Shot there for the first time in 1978 as a kid. Spent untold thousands of dollars there in the two decades following. Was a regular shooter, once or twice a week for years.
Try as I might, I haven't spent a dime there since the current owners took over. Though I stopped trying long ago.

Nice store, nice stuff.  Lousy customer service and generally laughable prices.

That place fucking sucks....they're not nice and the range in the winter is as cold as it is outside.

Check your storage contract, a year of no payment might equal abandoned property. I sure hope not.

Bunch of assholes there. High prices, no selection, really bad attitude, no knowledge, Used pistols are more than MSRP sometimes and I've seen many dinged up guns as well. I'll never go there again either.

I call Mitchell field too far and too $$$$.Driving 45-60 minutes instead of 5,plus gas and what is it now,$20 non resident???
Plus summer hours are great for those who don't have a job.
I've gone there 2 times, called ahead and got there and it was closed and then closed fpr Police training...

Are we being banned for having an opinion?  Then I don't see the connection.

I do love when people say things like "they're always real good to me."
Just 'cause someone whispers in your ear while they're raping you doesn't make it love making.

Wow sorry you got raped. So it's fine to say some place sucks but not to say they don't??
Don't pay your rent for a year then complain when you go to the storage place after hours
and they turn you away. It's their fault he did'nt pay.

I didn't mean them in particular , just stores in general. It doesn't matter how bad a place is or that 99.9% of the reviews are bad, there will always be someone who says "They're good to me, I like it there." Some people have nothing to compare it to.

As for your post above, you seem to be reading a different thread. He complained they turned him away, nothing more.

I'm posting here realizing they (L.I.S.C.) know EXACTLY who I am from my user name.
Saying that, I'll state this.

They treat me fairly when I walk into their establishment. I will admit to not purchasing a firearm from them since 2008 or so. I paid a lil' bit over premium for the firearm in question (I was ok with that) but, the thing that turned me off was a "gun repair" I gave them. It was a rather simple job of "light striking." Firearm in question was an older .22 revolver.
Well, 18 months later (yes, that's right, a year and a half later) the revolver they had in their procession was still not fixed !

I got disgusted and requested my still "broken" revolver back. The kick in the balls (besides the 18 month wait) was the $91.73 bill !  A bill for $92 dollars that did NOT fix my broken revolver that THEY had for 18 months !  I should have charged THEM for the months that I did not have my gun.

Anyway, I was able to get my revolver back after 18 months, in the SAME condition I gave to them, to the tune of $92.
The end result was.........I had my Uncle fix it for me in 3 days !!!!!!  He simply made me a new firing pin.

OP,

Did you call and arrange to make payment yet?  I smell a troll...  What kind of a person leaves someone with his AR-15 for over a year knowing that he's behind on payments and that they could likely consider it abandoned and sell it to someone else.

I've never been to LISC but it seems like a lame place 50' shooting range, what's that for throwing darts?  I i hate shooting at 25yd ranges.  50' is useless to me unless there's multiple targets and I can seriously get on the trigger...what a joke, it's like the shooting equivalent of masturbation.

We don't have much in indoor ranges on Long Island

I've been there once–––– its not much to look at. I dont remember much in the way of employee interaction either positive or negative, but I will say that I have heard from co-workers and friends that they have had bad experiences there.  Given that there are better outdoor/indoor ranges nearby, I never go there.

Yes. I gave them a call the other week and they insisted the payment come from my sister, as the rifle's technically in her title. So I handed her some cash; she promised she'd get to it this week.

Why wouldn't they take the money from you.  That's just *********.  If any stranger came to me and said I'll pay you the $$$$  that abc person owes you.  I'll be like "OH THANKS !"

Not to be a pessimist, but I wonder if they were refusing to do so because the rifle is GONE and they would only tell the registered owner about it.

Eitherway, this place sounds like a hell hole, even more so than my local range.
