Having gone from using very basic phones for years to now having my first smart phone, I have some questions..............Seems most of you guys have iPhones or other smart phones.
The packet data bit. On my phone it can be switched on or off. Useful if you want to avoid internet roaming charges etc abroad. But.................when here in the UK - do I need to turn it on ONLY when I need to access the net and turn it off again after ? Or can I leave it running ? If left running, and I am not logged onto the internet or downloading e-mails, is it still using up some of my allowance when in standby mode ? |

On the keypad dial: *#*#4636#*#*
You then get access to a hidden menu. from the Phone Information, there's a menu to disable the data connection You can't otherwise guarantee that you're not using data, even if you're disabled the auto sync: I only do this when abroad, in the UK, I've got 1GB allowance and even with all the sync switched on, downloading apps etc, I never get close, but then I don't download movies or music. |

Will it use up data allowance when on 24/7 ? |
Admittedly I don't browse much, but my emails are sync'd 24/7: so far this month (23 days) I've used probably about 40MB I think, I still have 988MB left
I won't be losing any sleep over that, then again I might if I get an email in the middle of the night and my phone bleeps |

Also it'll stop the phone sending info about where you are without you knowing. The phone company will still track you but some apps especially google ones (maps footprints etc) will track you and send adverts to your phone based on the local area. I found it very hard to know when these apps were running or not and some switched back on without being selected (especially Skype if you are on three - there was no way it could be switched off without downloading a third-party app to do this). Also get a good quit app program. |
