Hey folks...just curious as I don't see any hard literature pertaining.

What is if any restrictions on handloads for deer rifle, specifically 300 blk other than the factory ft lb/caliber and dimension requirements I don't see anything about handloads.

Could use enlightening, I am not a deer hunter but like to be in the know.

I don't have an answer, but I just posted your question on Illinois Carry in case you don't get a response here.

How would they know? I was given two 5 gallon buckets of brass. It was filthy so doing a bit here and there. Less than a fourth of the way through the first bucket I found 22 Blackout cases. With 19 different headstamps.

Ive used 300 Blk Out for deer hunting in Texas and its effective, and to answer your question it looks like the regs state a factory round with stated ballistics.
The only legal ammunition for a centerfire handgun or rifle is a
bottle-neck centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case
length not exceeding one and two-fifths inches, or a straight-walled
center-fire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger, both of which must be
available as a factory load with the published ballistic tables of the
manufacturer showing a capability of at least 500 foot pounds of
energy at the muzzle.

To me I would just get a box of factory ammo and be done with it. Illinois hates the 2A and the DNR would be more than happy to find anything you do wrong to hang you out to dry. Why take that chance?

That's the truth right there. I have a couple of friends who ended up in various degrees of hot water for doing ticky-tack little things.  Yes, the law is the law, but it's easy to run afoul of it.

As for my post on Illinois Carry, nobody has replied.  Sorry.

Honestly I don't understand what the debate is about.

300 AAC Blackout is specifically listed as an APPROVED cartridge on the list published by the IDNR.

The regulations only say it has to be "available" in a factory load with 500+ ft/lbs.  Those regs don't say anything about the actual load you have in the gun, just what is available from a factory.

If the regulations don't say you can't use reloaded ammo it is a non-issue.  Just don't use FMJ's.  Done and done.

This.  The only way to know is pull the bullet, weigh the powder charge, and tell them the powder.  They would then be forced to look it up.  These are state employees, they aren't putting in that much effort unless you really messed something else up.  They are going to make sure you have your tags, they are signed and that it's modified to a single shot.

I got stopped several years back carrying a Rem 700 ML that had been converted to shoot smokeless.  From more than three feet away it's indistinguishable from a regular 700.  I had my speech all prepared.  I don't know if he even looked at the rifle.  He was more concerned that I didn't sign one of the tags.
