| i just bought a usp 40 cal and in the box is a spent shell casing with a s/n on the envolope my ffl said if so they can trace the gun if its used in a crime ????? when the hell did they start doin this |
| I don't know when HK started this but I know MANY companies are now sending a spent shell case to be compliant with laws of certain states. Maryland and California to name 2. If the pistol is not sold in states that require record of a "ballistic fingerprint" then you can keep it and do with it what you will. It's strictly a business decision (I hope) to sell handguns in states they couldn't if they didn't do this. MJD |
| That shell casing is madated by some states that require it for the gun to be sold in their state. When the dealer sells the pistol, he takes the shell casing and sends it to the state with all the information about the person who bought it. If you got the casing with your pistol, there is no record being compiled in your state. It is much easier for HK to include it with all pistols and then the states that require it have it rather than trying to determine which pistol will go to what distributor and sold to what dealer in what state. |
You can thank Maryland for that one. Our general ASSembly passed it back in 2000 effective on new guns/guns made on/after Jan 1, 2001 have to have a spent casing. They're trying to(with the backing of the MD State Police)repeal the law becuase its too cumbersom and costly to maintain the system and doesn't effectivly solve any crimes, DUH!! |
