| question is how durable are the polymer frames opposed to aluminum frames like the sigs? Hk to glock to kimber to who ever makes polymer fames, other then light weight what are the pros and cons to them vise metal frames and which will last longer? If I dropped a glock from a two story building ( which has probably been done) and a say spring field 1911 which would have the least damage? |

I think polymer has proven itself to be a fine alternative over the past 20 years. I would guess that metal could stand up better that plastic. But as long as you keep your pistol out from under the tire of a very large truck, you should be fine(even then, I have seen the plastic handle of a Fiskars axe run over and it stood up fine; plastic can be a very strong material). Polymer is more comfortable to shoot bare handed in the winter, especially if your hand is sweaty(cold metal plus sweat could lead to a tongue+flag pole type incident). Anyway, do it the arfcom way. Get both |

I am sure if you threw a plastic frame & metal frame handgun into the great outdoors and came back in 50 years the metal frame handgun would have issues. If the springs and if corrision hadn't locked them up they probably would still work; but I would put my money on the plastic one. If you took the two same handguns and used them heavily, ran them over, took a hammer to them. I would probably put my money on the aluminum and steel handgun. 1. Plastic doesn't bio degrade and gives but can crack. 2. Metal corrodes and rusts and doesn't give as much but can take the hammer. |
| My now closed indoor shooting range had a rental glock 17 that shot 500,000 rounds and cracked the slide. The slide was replaced and was still in shootable shape when the range closed, at that time it shot 750,000 official rounds. The owner told me that the count is probably higher because this is only for ammo bought from the range, and it doesn't include ammo that was smuggled in from outside the range. Now I dare you to wear out a Glock frame. |
