You have the right idea. The higher off your hand the barrel sits, the more upwards the recoil will be due to the higher pivot point. This is why Glocks have more backwards recoil than upwards.

Yes, basically by increasing the distance between hand and bore axis you are creating a longer moment arm. A longer moment arm means you are able to apply a greater torque(rotational force).
