You know the drill.

Options  Ruger LC9s vs S&W Shield 9mm vs Springfield XDs 9

Must have safety and this will be occasional carry gun.

What works and what don't?

and yes I know, glock makes one now but I am a glockaphobe so no thanks.

Look at a Sig P239 9mm. No safety but it is DA/SA. Plus it is a very reliable Sig, if you get one you will never look back IMHO.

If by safety you mean manual one, then you can eliminate the XDs. Look for a S&W 3913 if you don't mind old school. Of your remaining two given options, I'd take the Shield.

Was looking at striker fire but thanks for the headsup.  If I buy another hammer 9mm I will consider

The XDs has the grip safety so that is why I have not eliminated it for consideration.

Also on the 3913 I am looking at striker fired.

Very small and hard to manipulate.   I have not heard of a fix

I am very happy with the Shield. The small safety lever does not bother me, I practice wiping it off
when I use the gun shooting and sometimes when I just pick it up. I am used to Glocks, so I
dont wanna try to shoot it and cannot. Same thing with my M&P 45c.

It's fine if you're used to 1911s. Just wipe it off on the drawstroke.

If it's stiff it will loosen with use pretty quickly. Or disassemble and lightly sand the contact points to make it easier.

I like the Ruger myself. Smaller by a bit than the others (disregarding the Sig 938), but seems to shoot like a much bigger pistol.

I am surprised that the aftermarket hasn't produced a more ergonomic replacement.

I wasn't thrilled with the lever on mine in the beginning, but after using it I've become comfortable with it.

After shooting all the guns you mention on numerous occasions I just bought an LC9S Pro.

It's the smaller gun I carry when I don't carry my 3913.

300+ rounds though the LC9S Pro and the more I shoot it the more I like it. It's 100% reliable and amazingly accurate for such a small gun. Best $300 I've spent on guns in a long time.

Sig P938 or Kahr PM 9 with safety.

If you want a single stack for compactness or concealability, I'd skip the 3913. It's taller, thicker and heavier than a Glock 19 with just over 1/2 the capacity.

I love my Walther PPS but lots of great options exist in the 9 single stack market now......
Glock 43
M&P Shield
Ruger LC9 LC9s
Kahr has several
SA XDs
Sig and the list goes on with 1911 single stack variants

Find what you like and buy it.

The OP is looking at slim, subcompact, pocket sized pistols. The 3913 is good for what it is, but it's in a completely different size class than the guns he listed. Tell me where I'm wrong.

I have to agree.  Same with the P239 9mm.  Great guns, but the same size as a G19/G23.

The "micro" Nines are a different class of gun.  I like the Shield, and the safety isn't an issue if one is used to 1911 carry.

The 3913 is slim and is a bit larger than the others, but not by much as I've handled and shot all of them next to my 3913. IMO, none of them are pocket pistols.

With regards to the G19, I doubt a fully loaded G19 is lighter than the 3913, but because I've never weighed the two, I'll give you that. But it's most certainly not taller, longer, and sure as hell not thicker than the Glock.

The 3913 is thicker, taller & heavier unloaded and those are facts. Looks at up for yourself if you don't believe me. The 19 might be a bit heavier considering it carries 7 more rounds.

The 3913 is taller and heavier ( empty ) but noticeably thinner than the Glock. I've carried both IWB ( Glock 23 actually ) and the 3913 carries easier. Your point is taken though, it's a large gun compared to the others he's talking about.

I don't need to look these dimensions up. I own both and and the Glock is a much chunkier pistol to carry.

Why do these type threads always turn into pissing matches to see who can pee furthest.  OP needs to shoot a few different pistols and choose that way not us argue over millimeters of differences in sizes over pistols.

OP until you go shoot and try different pistols fingerbang a few at the least listening to what any of us say is all based on what we like best.

Don't see where the OP mentioned pocket carry, just single stack striker fired 9mm w/safety.
