From the second your finger touches the trigger, until a round is fired and the trigger is released.

Could someone talk me through the stages of a trigger pull using the correct terminology for each stage, and describe what is happening internally to feel resistance

Ie ... pre travel, take up, break, post travel, reset etc

ie and during this stage the trigger bar is making contact with the...

Not everyone knows their guns inside and out as well as some of you guys,

Im trying to learn and understand, so if you could take a min and help me out or post a good link Id appreciate it.

Since all guns/triggers are different lets assume said pistol is a SMITH & WESSON MP 9

Here's an animation of most striker fired pistol's operation cycle.

The takeup occurs as you take the "slack" out of the trigger, move the firing pin block out of the way and move the striker away from the firing pin allowing it to generate enough inertia to ignite the primer.

The trigger break occurs as the connector releases the striker allowing it to move forward and strike the primer, igniting the primer and beginning the powder combustion.

The combustion gasses causes the slide to move rearward, extracting and ejecting the spent case and stripping a new round off the magazine, if the mag is empty, the slide should lock to the rear delaying the completion of the operating cycle for the time being.

If there's a round in the mag, it will be pushed into the chamber as the slide moves forward and the connector will be reset allowing it to move the striker to begin the firing cycle again.

This article is about the DA trigger pull, but the lessons apply to any trigger. One of the best and easiest to understand walkthroughs I've ever read. http://pistol-training.com/articles/fear-not-the-double-action-shot/comment-page-1
