Howdy all,

Was at the range today, introducing a friend to the world of recreational shooting, and my slide quit locking back on an empty mag. "Hmm," I thought, "that's weird, even for an old gun (purchased in 1991)." It continued to fire, and I could lock the slide back if I thumbed the slide lock manually.

I routinely clean the gun immediately once I get home. Disassembly was normal, cleaning was normal, but when I reassembled the gun, I was having an impossible time putting the slide lock back in. Turns out, the very end of the slide stop, the part that hooks up and holds it close to the slide, was totally broken off. The break was so clean, I hadn't even notice it while I was cleaning the piece!

My plan is to order a new slide stop off of Brownells, where prices range from $25-$55, unless anyone has a better suggestion...

I'm also considering calling Colt directly. Has anyone dealt with their customer service center before?

Finally, I'm hoping this is just part of owning an older firearm. Have many other colt M1991A1 (or other 1911) owners had this problem before?

An extra slide stop is the only 1911 part I keep in my range bag. It's arguably the hardest working part on the pistol.
Get a Wilson Combat 1911 slide stop.  It'll likely never fail again, but well worth it to have on hand anyway.

There's a blued version as well.

Just order another one (Wilson or Brown).  The Colt slide stops commonly break in this area.   Too bad, too... it's an otherwise good part.

I went ahead and ordered two more straight from the Colt manufacturer. I figure the factory piece lasted 21 years and over 2K rounds... anyway, it was $65 for the pair, or $65 for a single Wilson Combat piece. And I'm on a college budget.

Thanks for your help!

Update: Slide stops and new recoil spring arrived today (so glad I though to add the spring, as an afterthought). Never was able to get ahold of their customer service department; email was bad and phone was always busy, but they responded to the "note" I attached on the order for the spring and combined the orders. Overall: descent experience. The parts fit perfectly. The slide stop has been slightly modified from the original 1991A1 version, is slightly beefier, and only came in stainless (my gun is blued). I don't mind the aesthetic difference though. In fact, I kind of like it.
