I put 50 rds through my S&W 1911 a few days ago and had some issues. During dry fire the trigger functions normally and feels fine. But when I load a magazine and go to fire the first round the trigger is really hard. I squeeze and squeeze and then squeeze a little more and it finally fires. After that the next 7 rds will fire normally. Then I load up a new mag and the first round has the heavy trigger again.

My first thought was that I wasn't depressing the grip safety all the way but I have ensured the grip safety was all the way down and it was still doing it.  Essentially I have a DA/SA 1911

Anyone know what's up?

Does your trigger have an overtravel screw?   Those bear against the mag catch, which can be under a lot of tension with a full mag in the gun.   If the mag catch has any room to move and your overtravel screw is set to minimal overtravel, I can see how a full mag might be pushing your mag catch further in and giving you not quite enough trigger travel.

Try loosening your overtravel screw maybe 1/4 of a turn and see if that helps.

I thought about my over travel screw but didn't think it made sense since the rest of the mag would fire fine. I didn't know the mag catch might be effecting the trigger over travel, I'll try that.  Thanks!
