SIG 320 Pulled by Houston PD (Page 1 of 2)

Houston PD Pulls SIG Sauer P320 Following Unintended Discharge Lawsuit The Houston Police Department has ordered approximately 1,200 officers to replace their SIG Sauer P320 service weapons. Joseph Trimmer has the story. Under the new directive, officers have until the end of September to make the switch. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by veteran HPD officer Richard Fernandez Jr., who alleges that his holstered P320 discharged without a trigger pull. Fernandez's legal team argues that SIG Sauer has long been aware of serious design flaws in the P320. His suit joins more than 100 similar claims filed nationwide since 2017, many alleging the pistols fired while holstered or after being dropped. SIG has dismissed the claims as misinformation spread by “agenda-driven parties.” |
| Without speaking to the validity of the 320 ND’s, the tide has turned against the 320 and Sig has fumbled the ball. I went to three LGS today and they’ve all stopped selling the platform. Distributors have them piled up on the shelves and mags, etc, are all not selling. What can Sig do to turn the tables? |
| The easiest way to disavow any responsibility for what happened is to blame it on someone or something other than yourself. With over 2 million P320 variations out there and many LEOs and service members carrying them, not to mention the competitive shooters, how is it that, basically, only a handful of them have any issue? Personally, I believe that those claiming that the P320 discharged all on its own and not being truthful. Many of the claims over the past several years have already been debunked and a few others where the officers finally admitted lying about what actually happened. Not every officer handles firearms safely nor do they have proper safety techniques and practices. I have had no issues with any of my P320s. In fact, if I had the spare cash laying around, I would have several more. |

No one is going to sell them, no one is going to issue them and any person carrying one is looking at a lawsuit if he ever has an ND. |

To me, it is still a very viable platform. The controversy surrounding has been mostly created by social media around very little facts and a lot of conjecture and assumptions. Most of this has been instituted by SIG haters and others who are just plain ignorant and/or biased. Personally, I have yet to be convinced that there is anything wrong with the platform. There are many guys who are biased towards SIG SAUER because of past business practices of SIG SAUER or at least the claims and assumptions of some past practices. SIG SAUER produces top-notch firearms regardless of which model. The P320 is one of the stables in their line-up. |

I have an P320 X5 Legion. Decked out to be a serious competition gun. Half the places I compete at, either the range or club has banned it. |

All they are doing is making decisions based on a "cover their ass" mindset. Some of these instructors have developed a pure hatred for the P320 based on social media posts and false claims. Some just do not like SIG at all. I wish that people had enough common sense and logistical prowess to make educated decisions instead of using emotions and inaccurate information. Has SIG SAUER handled this debacle wrong? That is debatable. Everyone has their opinion and it will vary as it will be based on whether a person is a SIG supporter or hater. Personally, I have been a SIG fan for over 20 years and I fully support them and their products. I have yet to be disappointed. That said, not everyone or every product is perfect. Sometimes, there are lemons that are produced and that goes for people as well as firearms. For some, you cannot teach them anything and they will not change their minds even when confronted with the truth. I want truth and I will not believe that the P320 is flawed until someone reputable has produced the absolute truth that a flaw exist. I also want to know the truth about all of the claims regarding these uncommanded discharges. I have yet to see any irrefutable truth that the claims are factual. Some people are prone to not admit responsibility for their carelessness. |

But sure - yes of course anyone who has an ND with a P320 is going to claim that. Curiously, there are a LOT of P320 NDs. Like.. a lot. Like, a whole shitload lot. By some estimates, P320 (per unit) has 20x AD rate of Glocks (per unit). How about that. P320 might as well be made from asbestos reinforced polymer and lubricated with Agent Orange. It's flaming liability in a box |

You cant discount the many video's of P320's going off untouched in holsters and you cant blame people for being leery of a product with continuing issues without an explanation. Its human nature. Glock has solidified its design with the thousands of torture tests over decades. The opposite has happened to the P320, a simple drop test by a youtuber and it goes off, upgrades after the fact and mystery discharges that seem to linger on. It right well could be a perfect storm of bullshit and bad luck but people tend to steer clear of both whether its true or not. |

Some people are prone to not admit responsibility for their carelessness. There are a couple issues. First was Sig decided to challenge the internet with their infamous "It ends today" and lost. I have always liked Sig, and even had a M18 for a short period of time that i never had the chance to shoot. At this point I am fairly objective in looking various firearms. Just because a company does product A very well does not mean that they will nail product B. Based on all the anecdotal evidence, i think there is something funky going on with the 320 that is resulting in "uncommented" discharges. Not so much on the recent batch of videos where people are able to manipulate the pistol to elicit the striker falling but, the lack of these incidents occurring on video with other popular service pistols such from Glock, S&W, Berreta, or even 226's or 365's. I think that issue with sig, is that they claim its a user issue, but for some reason, users are not having these issues with their 365 or 226. They cannot articulate why their end user are able to navigate using other pistols in their product line but lose their mind and shoot themselves with the 320. |

He is as solid as they come. Poor weapons handling is not an issue that comes up often at this dept. I also hired a lot of off duty HPD guys for security at a prior job and it doesn't appear their hiring/training standards have dropped like other departments in recent years. This is not a weapons handling issue. The only mitigating factor I would give points to Sig on, which is still something Sig should have considered in their design/manufacturing, is that duty holsters are so rigid that when bending over, wrestling with subjects, getting in/out of car, that any pressure on the butt of the pistol is likely to cause a lot of stress at the between the FCG and the slide. This would exacerbate any tolerance stacking issues. HPD also has a lot of guys carrying 1911/2011 pistols and they aren't seeing ND's there either (although I'd argue those people are usually "gun guys" a little more focused on safe handling). |

The biggest Police Supply store in the South (G.T. Distributing) pulled every Sig 320 , both new & used, off their shelves. They are not taking in ANY in trade on other makes or models either as departments & agencies left & right rush away from the 320 over the "Accidental Discharge" concerns. The rush to acquire & issue the 320 when Sig won the big US Military M-17 / M-18 contract is only eclipsed by the flood of those now abandoning the 320. Where Sig goes from here ... ? Sig is a study in how not to handle a problem such as this. Their crisis management team and their legal team couldn't be more tone deaf, and their aggressive defiance will sink them. Even if the 320 is the safest pistol on earth, Sig's behavior has soured me on the company permanently. |

Taurus had an issue with their 24/7 Socom (2008-ish?) that also did not have a trigger dingus and they replaced the parts causing the issue IIRC. Those guns had great OEM triggers but a buddy that had one and said the trigger was shiite after the recall. They did fix it though. |

But did have a few 226, 229 and a SIG Pro (don't remember the caliber, but I've seen 9mm & 40s&w multiple times in the past). |

I feel like an idiot for trusting that all the problems had been long ironed out on the 320 when I bought 2 m18x’s earlier this year. I’ve only shot one, I doubt I’d get more than $200 per gun trying to sell, maybe $100 on trade in. It was $1,400 new per pistol. Sig is dead to me, I’ve shelved my 2 P365s. I pop into the sig pistol forum on occasion just to see if Sig finally tried to do the right thing but way way late. Even if they come clean now, I don’t think they salvage their reputation. Even if they admitted the problem, fixed the guns or at least inspected every gun to weed out the problem guns, I don’t think anyone other than a few outliers would even want a p320 at this point. I think this strongly carries over to their other offerings as well. I planned to buy a spear LT this year, now I that rifle is also dead to me. |

I just got off a wreck with a trooper and they are still carrying the P320. After reading DPS's testing report and the updated FBI report on the platform, they aren't going away from it. |

The 320s with optics were replacing the 320s without optics. Does anyone know how long they issued the original 320s? And were/are the old/new ones 9mm/357sig? |

By some estimates, P320 (per unit) has 20x AD rate of Glocks (per unit). How about that. P320 might as well be made from asbestos reinforced polymer and lubricated with Agent Orange. It's flaming liability in a box Yea and I’m sure there is a “shitload” of ND with other manufacturers too. 99.9% user error. |

Among topics discussed was vast superiority of BMW over Harley Davidson, the "Jeep Duck Cult" & the Sig 320 & TXDPS satisfaction with them. From my limited survey population of about two dozen different Troopers asked about the 320 use, all the Texas Troopers I've asked (so far) about TXDPS issue 320s have stated the TXDPS has NOT experienced ND / AD issues. They generally have been very pleased with the gun and optic issued. Clearly the debate & controversy continues but front line TXDPS Troopers don't seem to be having "issues" with the 320. There were some older 220 (.45 ACP) & 226 in 9MM that were surplused when TXDPS went to the 226 in .357 Sig across the board as the "Standard" pistol prior to the 226s then being replaced by the 9mm 320 as the current issued pistol. Bigger_Hammer ![]() Has any department suffered more than one SIG 320 UD? I expect Texas, given our police population, has had several 320 UDs, but I'd be surprised if any given department has had more than one UD w/ em. |
