What is the going price for these guns? I have a friend who is thinking about selling his 1911 to me, but not sure what it is worth. There is some surface rust on the side and a touch of rust at the base of the mag well. I have cleaned this gun more than once after a trip to the range, so I know everything else is clean. Next question would be how to clean the rust off the stainless and would this even be worth the work?

It wouldn't be worth more than $550-$600 to me in that condition.  Maybe a little steel wool to get some of that rust off.  All depends on how deep the rust is.  If its deep, it might need to be bead blasted.

NEVER use steel wool on stainless!! Little fleck of the carbon steel imbed in the stainless and will cause MORE rust. Instead, buff it off with a scotchbrite or other non metalic abraisive and let set out in a not too humid room to pasivate again.

Not sure on spelling but AM sure on process.

Yeah, that's a great pistol but it can't be worth more than $600 with the rust. Which Loaded model is it, and what year was in manufactured? Round count? We need pics.

Surface rust on brushed stainless is an easy fix with a Scotchbrite pad.  Just rub in the direction of the original finish.  Surface rust on a bead blasted finish is difficult to fix without blasting.

In that condition, I would say offer him $500.

Thanks guys for the tips. It is a friends dads gun, and I am sure I have shot it more than he has, I know I have cleaned it more.

Round count, not sure. I would say around 500. Model and year, I have no idea, yet. I said I cleaned it, not studied it..shame on me.
