One of my good friends from work just bought a used Charles Daley .45 ACP.  It is a nice looking gun, great trigger etc. on it.  And it actually shoot well, ok it will shoot well if you can get the rear site to stay on.  The rear sight has an allen wrench set type screw in the middle of the rear site.  Even with it cranked down hard it will still come off after 1-2 rounds being shot.  I talked with a local gunsmith about this and he said the dimple the slide so the set screw will have something to sit in.  We did that and put lock tight on the set screw.  Well we shot it again and well the lock tight is still holding tight on the set screw but it is moving from side to side now.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do?  I told him that we could try and put another rear sight on and see if it would stay in, or either have it brazed or silver soldered on.

I am by means no expert on this so if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Try a new set screw.
They weren't really made for multiple tightenings.
The gripping surface wears down and won't bite on the very tip.
Better yet, get 2...when you have it sighted in, dimple the spot where it sits (drill), replace sight and install the new screw.
Look for the nylon "lock" in the threads.
Ideally, the sight should be tight before, even without the setscrew.
Should it come loose after that, I would look for a tighter fitting sight.
They are not all that expensive.
Good luck.

Another thing you can do is use a centering or stipling punsh to peen the inside of the dovetail, this raises a bit of metal in the slot and adds a friction point to the rear sight base so it is less inclined to move....HOWEVER I have had limited success with this technique....it just doesn't work on some guns...give it a shot though.
