I just bought 2 new Springfields this week.
Got a XD Mod 2 4" Service and a XDS 9 3.3 with Crimson trace.....both in 9mm. After putting about 400 rounds through, between both of them I noticed something I did not expect. 1. The Mod 2 has more recoil than the XDS. Figured it would be the other way around. 2. At 15 yards I was more accurate with the XDS. Not much difference, just quicker with follow up shots. After maybe the first 200 rounds the mod 2 was hurting my wrist and the XDS didnt cause me any issues in my wrist. Just to clear it up I have a bad wrist from about 25 years ago playing football, snapped the wrist, broke most all knuckles and several fractures in the palm and finger bones. Age has affected my ability to shoot the .40's and .45's and enjoy it. Anyone else possibly notice the same? Also, what range are the Springfield typically sighted for? I assume 15 yards since both guns were pretty dead on bulls for me vs 7 yards,I seem to shoot about 1.5" left with them both. By the way loving them both. |

I have not personally had my hands on the service mod 2 for live fire, but I think I know where you are coming from. I have a 45 XDS 3.3 and a pair of XDM 45s. I do well with the XDMs but the XDS I can punch holes inside holes. I dare say I'm definitely more accurate with the xds. As for recoil, I find almost no difference in recoil between the 3.3" barrel in the single stack frame and my 4.5" 45.
Id contend that your experience isn't a discredit to the mod 2, but rather a large credit to the XDs. If they come out with a slightly thicker gripped xds that holds 10 rounds of 9mm, I'd sell every carry gun I own and buy one instantly. |

Agree, they are both great but the XDS is working best for me of which caught me by surprise. Usually with small guns I do not do well at 15yds. At 15 I blew the center of the bull out.
As for the recoil I could definitely tell them apart. Maybe not so much recoil after I have thought about it some more. I think just the extra added weight and length of the slide coming back just puts the right amount of snap/pressure into my already weakened wrist. Now for a target gun I do like the trigger pull on the mod 2,its one of the lightest trigger pulls I have ever had on a striker. Yet I still did better with the XDS. |

Just a follow up.
I took my LTC (Texas License To Carry) course Monday and was toying with different ways to grip the Mod 2. What I then realized is that I wasnt gripping high enough on the grip with my strong hand. In return that was causing it to seem as if there was more recoil than the XDS. My previous handgun was the Ruger SR9 and S&W Shield and gripping wasnt as high up. So I took my course with the Mod 2 and scored 244 out of 250. And I think I could have done even better but I forgot my sunglasses and at the 15 yds I had trouble seeing the target, the sun was glaring on the white and 3 of my rounds went into the 3 point section. All others were in the 5 points out of 50 rounds required for the course. For me the XDS and Mod 2 are just as accurate for me. After the course I fired another 50 rds with the XDS just as if I was doing the shooting part of the course and actually scored better, only 1 in the point circle on the DPS target. But the sun wasnt directly on the target this time either. Overall I am very happy with both and would have no issue recommending them to anyone. Also got my holster in yesterday and so far very happy with that too. I got the Vedder IWB Rapid Tuck. I had problems finding one I really liked for the XDS with the Crimson Laser Guard. But I think this one will do great so far. Retention is a bit tight but after a few draws and re-holsters it loosened up and is doing well. It does not have a retention adjustment, just cant adjustment. Now just got to decide on one for the Mod2. Thinking a leather OWB. Open to suggestions. Anyway thanks for all the info and replies. |
