We had a thread here a while back about Kahr rust issues.
I have several other stainless guns and with similar handling, cleaning and storage none of them have any rusting problems. I don't carry my P9 so it's not like it gets handled a lot or sweated on. My P9 rusts easily on the slide stop, both the release pad and the end of the pin. It also rusts in the slide serrations on both the surface and in the corners of the cuts. I decided to address this with a heavier protective lube. I'm going to try Boeshield T-9. I started with Wenol to polish off the rust. This a paste polish similar to Simichrome or Flitz. It did a great job on the pin but even though I worked it down into the slide serrations with a toothpick and Q-tips it doesn't look like it removed 100% of the stain down in the milling crevices. One thing I noticed is that the pin came up to a mirror polish, even on the pad. Too shiny in comparison to the matte finish on the rest of the gun. Even with the additional work, the slide remained matte. This leads me to believe that the parts are of a different grade of steel, the slide stop being far less "stainless" or at least softer steel. I sprayed the Boeshield on the stop and the exterior of the slide and let it dry for 24 hrs. This is supposed to provide a thicker and more persistent layer of preservative. I lubed the lock work and internals normally with break-free and a little tetra grease. I hope this solves the rust issue. These are not inexpensive guns and I'd hate to think Kahr went cheap on the steel. If it's not too expensive and they'd do it, I'd almost like to return it to Kahr and have these parts coated with whatever black finish they are using on the newer guns. Does anyone know if they offer this? I guess something like Duracoat would work too but the stop is a friction part and I'm not sure how well it would hold up. Any recommendations on a refinish? |

I haven't had any problems with my PM9, and it has been carried almost daily (except here recently because I'm on injury leave). On all of my guns, I put a coat of Turtle car wax on them. On the guns that get carried or used more often, I will put a coat every so often. Between my dad and I, we have been doing this over 30 + years, and have never had a problem with rust. Also, whenever I am done with a gun for the day, I wipe it off with a silicone cloth. As far as refinishing, give Kahr a call, and ask them. |
| as all stainless products have some amount of Iron in them (which we know will rust). I am wondering if what your seeing is a surface type none pitting rust??Just asking here, for again some peoples bodies tend to give off more of a acidity content than others. I wipe my K9 and PM9 down with a silicone cloth and I carry my PM9 in front pocket for ver 3years and mine has never showed any signs of discoloration even. |
