I've read that some of these guns have trouble feeding hollowpoints, others don't. Is there a way to tell either by visual identification or year of manufacture, or do you just have to just feed the thing hollowpoints to see what happens?
To add on to this, I've read that this issue can be fixed relatively easily by a gunsmith. What is the procedure, who does it and is it doable by the average "amateur gunsmith"? |
A lot has been written about the earlier P6's having some difficulty reliably feeding some brand of hollow points. Here is a picture of the two different barrel feed ramps that P6's have used. Sig changed feed ramp geometry from 52 degrees to 54 degrees 6/14/89. This was done to feed hollow points more reliably. This isn't to say that previously manufactured pistols don't feed them reliably just that the original pistols were made with FMJ bullets in mind. My P6 with a date of 3/80 has the ramp illustrated on the right and will feed 115 Federal Hi Shok HP, 147 gr Federal HST, and 115 Speer Gold Dot HP's with no issues. The bottom line is that you just have to experiment with different style and brands of hollow points to see what works for you. ETA If you did get a P6 which has issues with hollow points there are gunsmiths who can alter the feed ramp. Customized Creations is one, also there is the option of purchasing a P225 barrel, EFK makes on which is $150. |

I may inquire about getting the feed ramp modified just for the sake of reliability, but until then I can try it out. Thanks! |
Here is a picture of the feed ramp in my P6. The date on the slide is 10/81 and the number on the barrel matches the pistol and slide.
I found mine will not feed Federal 135 grain Hydra-Shock reliably. It did feed Winchester 115g PDX, Remington 147g Golden Saber and Federal 115g Personal Defense without any issues. Rich |
