I just purchased my 1911 literally yesterday, its a springfield micro compact and i was wondering do any of you who own one (or any micro compact for that matter) have a problem as to where the slide lock catches mid magazine? It happened a few times today at the range about 2 or 3 rounds in the magazine slide would catch with there still being 3 more rounds in the magazine.

Also do any of you guys get hit with your spent shells? I was getting pelted in the face and on the top of my head from spent Carts.

Tag for somebody with more knowledge than me, but both problems sound like grip issues.

eta:  buddy of mine had an officers model.  When he would let it recoil too much the spent cases wouldnt eject right and his off hand would often hit the slide lock.

It could just be your grip. Have you shot other 1911's before?

When I bought my first officers I had a similar problem. A competitor advised me to shoot with my thumbs on the slide release and thumb safety.

That problem went away for me after.

Like do you mean I could be letting the muzzle flip too much? I have shot 1911's before but not the Officer size ive only shot Commander size.

No just that your left thumb could be whacking the slide release up during recoil and causing the slide to lock.

Never thought of that ill have to take it out later and check to see what it is that I am doing. I would love to stop getting hit in the face with spent cartridges though lol.

Slide stop could also be out of spec and catching on the nose of the bullets as they're moving up in the mag column.

Also, you might want to check to see that the extractor is tensioned properly. Might cure any ejection problems.

Well it is brand new so one would assume all those things would be up to code.

I didnt get a chance to go out sunday i will try to go out sometime later on this week and ill up date im hoping it doesnt keep doing this, but a small side note i dont think it is my hand hitting the slide lock i have to reposition my hand in order to hit the slide release or hit it with my free hand.

My first thought.  Seems pretty common with sub-compact 1911s.

I never recommend sub compact 1911 pattern pistols. Ever. That said it is very common for shooters to ride the slide stop with their thumb when shooting and actually push it up while shooting...

It might be new, but it still might not be in spec. Ask someone that has problems with their $1400 Springfield TRP not liking Wilson mags. Swap out the Springfield slide stop, and they work like they're supposed to. New parts can be crappy too

To be sure, check and see if there's a lot of copper on the nub of the slide stop that's inside the magwell. That will help lead you in the right direction.
