I have been reading about the rust problems with the M&P's I just got a M&P 40 for a Valentines present Feb. 13th 2010 and I called S&W and they said the Manufacturing date was Nov. of '08 and I was wanting to know if this is around the time the rusting was an issue? I have not fired the gun yet and was wanting to know if I should mail it back to them or not?

I guess the appropriate question they will ask is "what are you sending it back for"? Here's some info for you though. Call them back and ask. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=16&t=90988 |

Call S&W. They will send you a return label via e-mail. I got mine the next day.
It will tell you to send your gun back in the pastic case and nothing else inside other than the foam. On paper list your full name and address and day phone # and why you are sending it in. Take it to Fed-X and it will cost you right at $5 for a box to send it in. If you use your own box prior to going into Fed-X Besure to tell them it is a handgun. I had Jenn take it just in the pactic case and let them box it up for her. |

I carry my full size M&P .40 in a horsehide Super Tuck almost every day, all day, in Florida; most days under only a single tee shirt.
The 5% of the time when my clothing calls for shorter grips for concealment, I carry an M&P 9c in the same holster. Never a single drop of rust; maybe because I wipe my pistols down with a gun cloth lightly impregnated with G96 every time I take them off, maybe because the melonite finish is properly applied, or perhaps the horsehide Super Tuck keeps the moisture and humidity away from them. My M&P .40 was manufactured in June 2008 and my 9c not long after that. |

I keep having the same thing happen on my 9c, but I just use a little #9 and clean it off. It doesn't seem major to me though VERY disappointing for my first S&W product. Especially on a slide that is stamped stainless right on the side. Call S&W. They will fix you right up with a new slide and barrel, like they did us. Plus a free mag to boot. A week and 4 days turn around. |

has it been established the range of dates this has been noticed? and also how do i find the date of manufacture of my m&p .45? is it validated by serial # alone? thanks! If you tell us the first three letters of your serial number I'm sure somebody can tell you pretty close. |

xx229x ........the date on the envelope containing the factory spent brass is 9/04/07. i bought in 4/08. if anyone could shed any light on this it would be appreciated. You have your answer right there. 9/04/07. That is the infamous period where most of the slides look like crap. |
