Sig 229 in 357 Sig.  Both factory mags rattle when I shake them.  The bullets have play inside the magazine towards the bottom.  Normal?

Yup, normal.

Normal in my .40SW and absolutely beyond annoying when doing drills involving anything more than walking, sold it.  Best luck.

Absolutely bullshit.  I would rather not rattle while walking or in a public atmosphere.

Well, what can you do?

Think of the way the magazine is made.... just like any other double stack.

Rounds sit on top of each other in staggered manner, and there is room infront and behind the round as it moves up. If the space wasnt there, it would increase the drag and more spring pressure would be needed.

Have you tried underloading the mag? (-1 round to see if it helps?)

I did try that actually.  Not that I would sacrifice a round for a little noise.  Just not good when you are trying to keep things concealed.  It really didn't help much anyways.

When finished loading a magazine, be sure and smack the back of the magazine against the palm of your hand a few times to help seat the rounds toward the rear of the magazine.

Always have.  Still no stopping the rattle.  They didn't use to rattle.  One day, one of the magazines began to rattle and a couple weeks later the second mag began to rattle.  I think they were finally broken in.

Do the P220s or P226s have this rattle "issue"?  I say issue because while it may bother some it doesn't bother others.

Thanks.

Lots of guns exhibit this.  My Beretta 92 does it with some but not all mags.

I consider it normal.  To the extent I even think about it.

My MecGar 15rnd 228 mags rattle but the 13 rnd do not.  Annoying as hell.

I have noticed this phenomenon with just about every double stack/high capacity automatic handgun I have ever owned, including my Sigs. My USPf.45 was the worst, but despite being annoying it has absolutely no adverse effect on reliablity. H&K even addresses this in the USP owners manual. In my experience, it varies from caliber/magazine/weapon...some do it more than others. My Sig Sp2022 magazines tend to rattle more in .357 than .40 and the occasional Walther P99 9mm magazine will also rattle. Give the back of the magazine a firm smack against your palm and this will usually cure the issue. With the exception of my USPf.45, the rattle is typically extinguished when the magazine is inserted in the weapon. Not something to be concerned with...

Same here, 15 rounders rattle, 13's don't. It bothers me enough to carry the 13's and give up the two rounds, instead of the 15's.

No only Glocks do that.

My brand new Walther P99 rattles (less than 2 weeks old with 300 rounds through it, double stack 15rd).

After loading, I tap it on both side and the bottom, followed up with the back (to move rounds rearward) and the rattle stops. I have had to do it a couple of times for the stubborn ones.

I hope this helps.

There's no rattle in my G17 nor in my Walther P99 .40sw w/10rd mags.

Rarely if ever happens in 10 rounders.  Seems to be a hicap thing, at least in my experience.

I have had this issue with most of my SIG and all of my USP 45 mags. What I do when they start to rattle is take them apart and re seat the spring. After doing this they don't rattle. I don't understand why this helps but it does. Just something you might want to try.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll give it a try.

One of the 2 mags that came with my 226 rattled really bad (I agree it's annoying), and the other didn't.  None of the factory mags I've bought for it since have had any any rattles.  None of my Glock or HK mags rattle at all, either.

download it by 1 round and/or push down on the top round with your finger and let it go really quickly.  Works in my 229 mags.
