I just sold my Walther P22 (was having a lot of issues with it) but I want to pick up a .38 or possibly .357 but I have been hearing the last couple of days that the J frame is not a gun you want to take to the range on a regular basis because its Aluminum Alloy and not stainless steel so it will probably wear out after time. All I want is a simple .38 that's reliable as a backup but that I can use for 20 years. Any Suggestions?

There are stainless J-frames available, they just aren't as lightweight as the alloy versions.

If you can handle the weight for your manner of carry, one should last and serve you well.

I had an all stainless 640, and it was a heavy sumbitch to CCW, especially in an ankle holster!

Sold it and went to a Glock 27.

Sold the Glock and went back to a J frame - this time a M&P340.

Perfect.

Wear out a gun?

Heck, bring it on!!!  IMHO, the most expensive part of the gun is always the cost of all the ammo you run through it during its lifetime.  Heck, the gun itself is the cheap part!

Two things will happen when you get a gun like a J frame:

1. You won't practice and/or shoot it very much . . . and it will never wear out, or . . .

2. You will shoot it a bunch and wear it out in quite a few years.

I fall in the second category . . . and I look forward to wearing my 1971-era Model 37 no-dash Airweight, for if I do . . . then I'll have lived a very, very, VERY long life!

Really, wearing out a gun is the least of my concern as an active handgunner and handgun competitor.  I'm more concerned for those who own handguns but don't practice.  This unwise practice may some day get them killed.

Live is short . . . so shoot the snot out of your handguns and enjoy life to the fullest doing so!  In the long run, they are a cheap expense for what you receive back in return!
