I've thought about getting a Dan Wesson VBOB with their fancy black finish this year. On the other hand, these are getting expensive enough that I think I need to explore a custom pistol first. Thing is, where to start with the features list? Here is what I think I need to start with. I'm looking for a quality, reliable CCW pistol, not a safe queen. Where I need to get to is a full spec the smith can price.
- Forged frame / slide (is Caspian the way to go here?) - Kart or Barsto match barrel - EGW / Ed Brown / Wilson internals based on the smiths judgement though I will spec a few things like the safety - Strong side safety - Heinie night sights - 25 lpi checkering on front strap, front of trigger guard, and MSH - Trigger job (4-5 lbs) - Melonite finish (assuming I can figure what to do with small parts.. otherwise ionBond finish on all) - Customer provided grips (I have too many as it is) - Some aesthetic features like arrows on the top of the slide What do I need to add/change on the list? |

Really when it comes to a custom pistol what I would want and what you would want are going to be completely different. I would get ambi safety, chain link front strap and MSH checkering, I would flute the top of the slide, Kart barrel/bushing fitted, VZ grips, Novak Night sights. Then I would have some different things added depending on what the purpose of the pistol is. Range/Comp pistol it would get a blended magwell, adjustable sights, but I mean I can go on for days how I would build a 1911 for different things. |

I realize there will be a lot of differences based on personal preference though I do enjoy hearing what others like. Thing is, what are the things on the 'must have' list for a quality CCW commander and how detailed does the spec to the gunsmith need to be? |

Reliability package
Dehorning job Good durable finish (melonite is excellent) Some want standard safety some believe ambi. My preference is ambi but not extended pads on the safety. Good set of grips that do not tear you up but keep good grip in your hand. Trigger tuned not light but not heavy I prefer about 4 to 4.5# Good holster Quality Ammo |
