Go to a gun store and handle each one, that should help narrow the field.

I know a LOT of Glock owners whom have switched over to the XD series, FWIW.

I'm still on the USP bandwagon...............

I have a G17, but my dad is a lefty so I bought a XD9 for him.

they both have their strong points.  I went with Glock because of the history of reliability, but the XD is ambidextrous.

Get the G-17. I have one and absolutley love it. The mags are cheap, it has a proven track record, they're accurate, and you can buy a .22 conversion for it. What's not to love?

Glock is the way I went (G19) but heard good things about M&P.

No, I use my G17 with the left hand all the time, to include reloading/malfunction clearing/drawing and holstering, etc.  I use the middle finger to hit the mag catch.  Works just fine.

Glock 19. It's the best!

I have an HS2000 (the XD before it was the XD) - love it but no preban highcaps

I have an M&P9c - no preban highcaps

I have a Glock 19 - lots of pre-ban highcaps, parts are all over the place, accessories abound.  Can be had on the cheap, REAL cheap, especially used.

The HS2000 was the best value at $219.99 back in 2001.  You can modify some other preban highcaps to use in the HS2000/XD and they work OK.  But I would prefer factory to trust my life to.  Perhaps my favorite of the three for range shooting or home defense.  I would not choose it as my carry gun.

The Glock 19 is super reliable, parts and mags are common, I trust it implicitly.  Does not fit my hand comfotably, but I still shoot it well.  It is my go to gun in case of an emergency and I have stocked up on about 20 preban highcap mags for it.  I also have a bunch of Scherer 33 rounds mags.

The M&P9c is my preferred gun for carry.  Feels good in the hand, slightly smaller than the Glock 19.  Only giving up 2 rounds between highcap mags and the 10 round postban limit in my state, so I'm not sacrificing too terribly much.

It is hard to beat the Glock 19 if it fits your hand.

shoot em all if you can before buying...that said, i would take a Glock hands down

To be honest, I didn't want to like the G19 because it's the standard answer when someone here asks what 9mm to buy.

There's a reason for that!!

I was thinking the same thing when I read that. Seems odd to not consider it just because it's at the top of the list for folks as a 9mm recommendation. I'd get the Glock 19. The Glock 23 was my second semi-auto. Tried HK, Sig, Kimber, Ruger, Kahr, Springfield, and a couple others... came back to the Glock, and specifically the Glock 19. I think the Glock 19 is the optimal defensive 9mm handgun due to size, cost, reliability, ease of use, ease of maintenance, cheap parts and durability.

Glock or M&P...both great pistols but I still prefer the Glock in 9mm slightly to the S&W due to its much longer top notch track record. If I was looking for a .45 however, the M&P or HK45 would get my business as the G21 and G21SF are still too damned fat.

I love the Glock 19, I like the Glock 17, I have been issued a M&P 9 for about 3 years.

As much as I love the Glock 19, I can shoot the M&P and the M&P9c a tad better than my beloved Glock 19, so The Glock is currently in my safe, and a M&P9c is on my hip as I type this.

Try to shoot both if possible, prior to buying.  The money you spend for rental fees at a range would be cheaper than the money you might spend on a gun that isn't right for you.  What fees good for one person might not for another.

Any of the Glock or M&P 9mm's are great guns in my experience.

I have no experience with the XD series, so I can't comment.

I know your choices are as stated XD, Glock or M&P.  Out of those, I think you are better off with the XDm.

But if you want to know the real truth, you need to add H&K to your list then I would tell you to get a P30.  This weapon trumps all of your stated choices.

I just picked up a 9mm M&P last week. I love it.
The grip feels awesome, and it shot so good that it almost made me look like I had some skill. Great gun so far, and ate all the ammo I could throw at it with no problems.

With the worst trigger ever put in a quality firearm.  If you get a CZ do yourself a huge favor and get one with a safety instead of a decocker.

If a Glock fits your hand, you will not find a better gun out there.

Bill Springfield can fix that...He did wonders with my pre-B 75.

The G19 is boring and unsexy, especially when you put it next to the latest offerings from HK or CZ or whatnot, but it's hard to see how you could go wrong with a G19. As has been stated, its reliable, tons of spares, cheap mags, etc and so forth.

Glock 17, 34 or CZ-75 or SP-01 if you want to shoot and shoot well.

If you want something pretty to look at get whatever tickles your fancy.  The M&P seems to be the closest competition to the glock in terms of shootability, but I dont trust anything smith and wesson makes anymore, durability wise.  Others might, I dont.

Sig P226 or the HK P30

Besides those 2, I would go with the XD.  If I could stand the grip angle, I would recommend the G19.

M&P's are great guns, accurate, reliable, and good ergonomics. Glocks and XD's are good too I am just partial to the S&W line. Go to a local gunshop/gun show and feel up anyone you can.

i have a Glock 19 and a xd. my next purchase will be a mp 9. If I had to choose just one,it would be the Glock 19. cheap mags and part and unsurpassed reliability 20 years under its belt says it all
