Question, Is there a standard revolver/caliber combination that is as commonplace for hunting/fishing expeditions into bear/moose country as the lever action 45-70govt? My thinking is that you want something big enough to protect yourself from harm, but be able to get a few follow-up shots if needed. Plus it should be somewhat easy on the hand to facilitate target practicing. Ammo availability is a consideration. You would want to be able to go into a local store and find ammo. 45LC? 44Mag? Other? -3D |

I didn't mean to imply that it needed to be rifle cartridge too. I know some guides use the same round for their pistol as their rifle to save weight. I mean simply 'what is the most common revolver (and its caliber) used in the Alaskan outback as a companion to a guide gun?' |

By far the 44 Rem Mag is the most carried Revolver in Alaska and probably always will be. The 44 Rem Mag was introduced in the mid 50s, it had no competition until the late 70s early 80s when folks started working with the 45 Colt and 454 Casull, the 45 Colt was expensive in the Seville, Linebaugh and probably whoever else was doing them Revolvers as were the Freedom Arms Revolvers which also had rights to the 454 Casull as well as all ammunition for it for another twenty years. It had close to fifty years to itself. To this day it is still one of the best choices for an all day every day Revolver. ETA in the 44 Mag the folks who like S/A Revolvers naturally shoot Super Blackhawks, the D/A folks like the 29/629, and Redhawks. |
