What is the point of flattening and adding serrations to the top and rear of slide?

Is it strictly for looks?

Helps dissipate light so it doesn't reflect into your eyes compared to having it smooth.

But, in practice, it's really for looks.

A flattened and serrated slide top, in addition to be a cosmetic modification, will help reduce glare of the slide top and most importantly facilitate the use of a taller front sight. Rear slide serrations, like serrations on a slide top or sight face, will help reduce glare.

Colt's enhanced series with the flat top, was great at cutting your hand open during clearing operations.
