What is the difference between a regular Springfield 1911 and their GI model? I know that the GI is alot cheaper, but what is the difference other than that?

There are several trim levels of Springfields.  They would go in this order:

Mil-spec
GI
Loaded
Operator
EMP (not really a step up from Operator, just the subcompacts)
Trophy Match (could be considered part of the TRP family)
TRP
Professional

Each model has more features, uses better parts, and has a better fit than the model below (generally speaking).

this is incorrect......it's gi at the bottom, then milspec, loaded operator/emp, trp, and pro  (the gi is springer's most basic model)

i assume the "regular" springer you refer to is the milspec, which has:  a lowered and flared ejection port, dovetail sites, 3 dot sites, stainless barrel, and is throated a little better than the gi model.

the gi model has none of these features, and the sites are tiny without dots, and the gi model only comes with one magazine, where as the milspec comes with 2.

let me know if you have any other questions, Tsmitty

Thanks for the help Kelly. Good to know since I am buying a 1911 real soon. I think I will go with the milspec then.

Interesting that the barrel hood is finished on the pro, as opposed to the stainless barrel on the TRP. I knew there were a few differences like the front slide serrations and the different guide rod (and bar stock parts).

I Just got a TRP last Saturday and I have a GI length Recoil spring guide rod and plug on the way, along with some double diamond wood grips with the flat magwell bottom. I could do without the front serrations but so far it's the nicest 1911 I've ever called my own.

Do you know if they hand fit the barrels on TRPs?

I think cuz the Pro is finished in Walter Birdsong's Black "T" (R.I.P.)
