I have been trying to find a 1911 smith to better my Mil-Spec and am having a hard time finding a someone to do the work. It seems all of the good well known gunsmiths are too busy to do any kind of "1911 packages" that isn't a full house custom. The only place that seems to continue custom work is Novak. Is there any 1911 smith that isn't to busy to do poor mans work?I am willing to spend up to 1,000 dollars to customize my pistol. This post was not to trash any 1911 smith as I have much respect for their work.

I have heard good things about the Springfield Custom Shop too. Also Wilson Combat has a good reputation. I had really good results from D&L Sports.

Id send it to Fisher-Price before I sent it to the Springfield Custom shop. I had some work done on one of my shotguns @ Wilson Combat a few years ago. The work was top notch and the turnaround on it was not very long

Exactly what kind of work are you looking to have done? Some shops have a "specialty" or are renowned for a certain aspect of their work which might help influence your decision.

I have a lot of work to be done. Here is the list:
Checkered strap
Lowered and flared ejection port
10-8 or Novak next sights
Crown barrel and fit match bushing or fit match barrel w/ bushing
Fit beavertail and commander hammer
Match trigger group
Replace springs
I understand this might be more than 1K but Id be willing to pay the extra cash. Yeah, I could by a nice brand new pistol but my current Springer has some sentimental value.

I am 110% happy with all three Novak pistols that I own. I would not hesitate sending future business that way.

You already have the best right there in your state, "Ten Ring Precision" of Texas. This guy even adds to small bead welds to a barrel so it locks up ultra tight. By far one of the best and most experienced 1911 Smith's in the country. Long before Novak was Alex. He's been in business for forty years.

I talked to Alex on the phone one day inquiring about getting a slide lapped to a frame. He asked me if the slide would fit on the frame. I told him it would and he said your already there. Use valve grinding compound and finish it yourself. I did, and three more!

Isn't the ejection port already lowered and flared on the mil-spec?

I also recollect the barrel is 2 piece welded. Don't want invest in that barrel. Get another with bushing and fitment.

Springfield will do the work you want at a reasonable price and timeline but change your specs. DON'T REWORK THE STOCK BARREL.

Most of the big 'smiths like to turn out a really clean product from a machining standpoint and don't like working with G.I.'s and mil-specs, among other brands. They'll do it but more $ to straighten lines and machining flaws.

Your budget for this work should start at $1200 and will go up.
