I spotted a stainless Colt Combat Commander in a pawn shop the other day. When I was checking it out there was a small amount, but noticeable, of play at the barrel hood while in battery. To me that seems to indicate an excess amount of wear between the barrel and slide. In my 1911s there is no noticeable play at the barrel hood or muzzle, so I walked away from this pistol.

About how much is it to have a new barrel installed in a Commander?

edited to add: It might be satin nickel, not stainless. It is a dull finish.

Probably not excessive wear, just a sloppy install.  I'd imagine you're probably looking at a minimum of $300 to get a match barrel properly fit.

At the back of the barrel you can just change out the barrel link (they make diffierent lengths/sizes - different length between the pin that connects the link to the barrel and the slide stop pin hole) which pushes the barrel farther up into the slide locking recesses.  Or install a Dwyer Group Gripper which does the same thing with a different link and recoil spring guide.

If the bushing is too loose you can buy/install a new bushing.

Don't get carried away on "too" tight.  The tighter it is the more chance you have of malfunctions.  My old 1911 rattles when you shake it and still shoots better groups than my BDM, Glock or XDM.

Recently gave this one to my son - the finish is electro-less nickel. While I had this 1911 for many years not all that wild about it..no special reason

Solid reliable Colt.
