Used shopsmith on craigslist near me, $575. Has bandsaw also. What is the hiveminds' opinion on these? Almost bought one at the state fair one time, wife drug me away... not a pro woodworker but i piddle around in the shop quite a bit.

My dad has had one for the last 20 years that has seen a lot of use. I don't remember the model but it is still going strong. If you have a narrow space or need to make use of the portability it might be the ticket.

If you have limited room and can think up ways to work around the machines weakness, get it.

But if you can, get a tablesaw to go with it. The way the Shopsmith is set up, the tablesaw table is too small and too high for comfortable use.

They are a solid machine... but... a PITA to switch between components and square back up if you are doing precision work.

I have one - from when I didn't have room for dedicated machines - and it will do pretty much anything you ask of it if you have the patience.

Will definitely help you to plan and optimize your order of operations.

If you are a carpenter the shopsmith is fine....if you want to be a craftsman get dedicated tools.
