I picked up this interesting tinned steel can painted dark military olive green, the top of the lid is clearly stamped  Model of 1916

you guys were right! it's a WWI Doughboy's bacon can! these were used to store salt, dried meat, bacon, etc

model 1910 bacon tin

they were discontinued after WWI in favor of canned food
