You want tacticool? Check out the Ek Commando Knife Company.

If you just want a serviceable knife at affordable cost, then check out the USAF issue survival knife by the Ontario knife company. The sell for about $30 at the PX.

Crap those things got spendy! Didn't those use to be in the 100+ to 150.00 range from US Cavalry?  I guess I must be getting old...

Find a local maker, every town has them you just have to look for them. Have him make you a blade of your choice from 0-1 (it is so easy to harden and temper no one could screw it up) with a simple finger guard and nice scales. It will be light and pretty much indestructable. It will probaby run about 2 bills with a nice sheath maybe less in your area. BTW 0-1 is still one of the best steels for blades.
This blade is 154 CM with brass hardware and stabalized scales it would run about 3 bills in this area, If you eliminate the brass, Use 0-1 and go with Micarta scales it leaves you with a blade of very high quality at a very affordable price.

So what are you going to use the knife for?
What's your budget?
What kind of timeline are you on before you need the knife?
What kind of maintenance are you going to be able to give your knife?
Where are you going to be using your knife?

If you were interested...I know a guy that has a contact overseas in Pakistan, that is forging really high quality 440c knives from your pattern...He likes making up his own patterns and having them made, and found out Pakistan was half the price of those made here, and they are made with US 440c Stainless, you need to send your own wood though...i think the guy has a nice supply of Micarta though..
Shipping is a bit high, as you can imagine...

Since someone above posted some REALLY good questions about what you want the knife for I'll mention that my RC4 is my general outdoors, campcraft, survival, do-all knife.  For rafting, kayaking and SCUBA I have different knives...it's not for that.  But for just about everything else it's my go to knife.  It's not primarily intended for Steven Segal style knife fighting against HSLD ninjas but it wouldn't suck as far as things you could get stuck using in a fight go.  It's pretty burly so you know you can do some battoning and prying without snapping it.  It's very fucking sharp but it's not stainless so it needs a bit of basic care.  It heavier than a pocket folder so you don;t always want it when doing 14ers maybe but it's nice to know you have it if you're willing to lug the weight.

hmmm, good questions i should have stated earlier
i plan on getting 2 or 3 different size knives, plan on using one as an all around utility knife (boxes, rope, etc), and one for carry as a SHTF situation, and one for hunting, fishing, etc. as far as a budget i was thinking no more than $250 for a larger knife and up to $15o on something smaller, as far as a timeline, i hate to say it but im impatient when it comes to waiting for something i just dropped some serious coin on. maintenance? people do that, something really nice i would take someplace to be sharpened. ive always had a knife fetish but im very picky when it comes to my blades, no china junk, all ive had is folders and decided its time to get serious

I bought a Camillus USMC Marine Corps Ka-Bar about 20 years ago. It has lasted me all this time. Takes a wicked sharp edge if you take care of it. Maybe "the small one" is the way to go, because that blade IS a little long.

ETA It'll likely cost only 1/2 of the price of the 'cool' blades.

TOPS makes a good knife. I had a Mocassin Ranger for a while till trading it. What you see as tacticool is a good question, because if it's just the blade, handle and sheath styles that's one thing, but if the materials than that's another. They use alot of 1095 carbon steel, micarta for the handle and kydex for the sheath. Those are all quality materials for a modern fixed blade.
If you want that and not alot of frill in design than a RAT by Ontario is a good choice. A Kbar is still a good knife today also.

If you want more corrosion protection there are lots of good knives out there. If you care for the 1095 with wiping it clean after water use and make sure it's oiled it will be fine. You might consider an Entrek. Similar materials but they use 440C steel.
