My MIL bought my daughter an iPod for Christmas.  It's at my house so I could charge it and put music on it.

I install iTunes, then plug the iPod into the computer per in quick start guide.

All I get is a red x icon on the screen.  The iPod won't even charge or begin the setup process.

I'm sure the apple/support site should be of some help.

Oh good, there's a page on the red x icon:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1463

It says to put the iPod into Disk Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US

However, the first part of putting the iPod into Disk Mode is making sure that it's fully charge.

Oh wait... it won't charge because all I get when I plug it in is a red x icon.

Guess it's time to learn about Apple service.

When they're dead-dead, sometimes they won't do shit until they get some charge in them.

If it's a DOA though, Apple service usually is pretty good.  If you have an Apple store nearby, you can just walk in with it and likely walk out with a replacement.

Well if you have chaged for a while you could do a reset.  Al you need to do is hold the middle button and the menu (top) part of the spinner.  If you hold this for like 20 seconds it should reset for you.  It should actually only take a couple of seconds but this is probably the first thing Apple wll tell you to do.  Make sure though that there is a good long charge in it before you do this because as others have said it will lock up if it goes completely dead.

So you got a bad ipod, take it to an Apple store for a replacement if it's brand new.

No kidding.

Guys, just because the majority of Arfcommers hate Apple for no good reason, doesn't mean they're some draconian group of hardliners that are only out to separate you from your money and not provide you with the product...

I have had ZERO problems with my Macs that Apple couldn't help me out with. The few times I needed help Apple customer service has fixed it.

Compare/contrast this to the poor hardware and service that I've had while supporting my wife's PCs and again, Apple SHINES.

If you are returning it to an apple store make an appointment online (via the apple site) to see a "genius" about the problem. If you go in without an appointment they will tell you to make an appointment and you may have to come back later that day (or the next day if they are really busy).

Considering that they make eleventy billion of them each year, I could forgive them for making a bad one here or there.  Apple is usually pretty good with their warranty service in the few times I've used it for other apple products, so it should be pretty quick and painless service.

I'm currently on hold for phone support.

There's reportedly an Apple store an hour from here at some mall I've never been to.

I'll go online and see about an "appointment."

It won't reset, probably because it has no charge.  Not charging is apparently the problem.

I had an older IPOD given to me by my BIL I dropped it and it went to shit so I went out to buy a new one.  I had that one for a while then just decided to try an dcharge my old one and see what happened, well to make a long stoy short my wife and I both have Ipods now.  The fynny thing was the Apple store told me I needed to buy a new one and the HD was trashed on my old one so I guess the "Genius" title does not always fit.  I still say do a good solid charge and then a reset before going in to get some high school student to show you how stupid he thinks you are.

True, some motherboards do not supply enough current to the device to do anything. My phone will only charge using the usb ports on the back of my shitty work computer, no other ports will charge it.

do you have a wall charger with a usb port? you could try that.

The iPod screen has shown nothing but the red x icon and an occasional flash of an apple icon –– no charging icon ever.  It's probably been plugged in a total of about 6 hours, with no indication that it is charging.

If your in warranty apple's service is awesome, if your not it sux (expensive).

I had a 3rd gen go bad, took it to the store. They looked at it for 15seconds and replaced it on the spot. Took about 10min for the paperwork.

Nothing to do with the dead ipod, but if you download to it from your computer it will be linked to your computer and no other (without aftermarket software) unless you reboot the ipod. You cannot transfer music from one computer to another via itunes (can be done in disk mode but when in disk mode you cannot listen to that music) just FYI in case you did not know.

Yeah, I've heard that iPods/iTunes are not very versatile with respect to multiple iPods per computer or multiple computers for an iPod.

Since this is my daughters, these shortcomings shouldn't really matter.

I had problems using multiple ipods some years back with considerably older versions of both itunes and the pods.  Anymore I synch an iPhone, a 3G 20gb iPod, a 4 or 5G 80gb, and my wife's shuffle all from the same computer without any issues.

Multiple computers per iPod gets fun though.. The DRM in iTunes is made to prevent that, but there's any number of freeware apps that'll do it manually.  It takes a better understanding of the whole thing to do, but it's possible.

I have a 30Gb iPod Video and just got an 8Gb iPod Nano as an early Christmas gift.  I have no problems at all keeping different playlists of songs or updating each iPod with those different lists.

Two different computers, though, would be a problem.

I bought an Ipod video and was having trouble just like you.
Long story short,my motherboard is an older one with USB 1.0. Ipod needs USB 2.0.
I fucked around for 2 weeks and spent literally 10-12 hours on the phone with Apple.
Bought a USB 2.0 card and installed it in my computer, Ipod worked like a dream!
Also, don't use the USB ports on the keyboard.
By the way,Apple support didn't figure it out,I did some research on the net. I was ready to throw the
thing against the wall I was so mad.

Told them the problem, and they swapped it for a new one.

On the new one, the menu actually appears when it's turned on. When plugged into the computer's USB port, the computer recognizes it, and it begins charging. In other words, it seems to be working properly.

Despite having several employees that look like refugees from an AIDS hospice / beatnik coffee shop / head shop (knit caps, seriously?), the service was quick and efficient. The short time I did have to wait was understandable considering the Christmas crowds.

Good service - kudos to Apple.
