Between my Wife, Mom and Sister in law all wanting to cook dinner their way I doubt we'll have Thanksgiving.  I think I'll just toss a microwavable turkey loaf in

My BIL gave me an outfit. I spent more on the peanut oil than I did on the bird.Since I'm married to a non-frying Yankee the oil went rancid before it was used again.

Yep no gravy

The turkey was great, but you have to watch out for oil splattering on your deck.

I have deep fried turkeys for the last 4 years.  I was up to 10 last year from the 6 I did the first year.  It is best to get as many families in on it and use the oil in one shot.  By the end of the day the oil ends up looking like motor oil from all of the seasoning and juices.  I pour it over the burn pile and let the naighbors smell the wonderful odor as it burns.

Sadly I have been benched this year.  The family wants me to take a break and we will be having oven baked turkey.    The tell me that I have worked my butt off these last few years and I diserve a break.

Agreed that Deep fried turkey is WAY better than the oven kind.  I love the crunchy outside.

I wonder what shake and bake or other batter would taste like on it?

After you are done cooking the turkey and let the oil cool down, is there any reason you can't store the oil in the freezer until you want to use it again.  Wouldn't this keep the oil from going bad with age?

You need to strain and otherwise get the contaminants out of the oil, those are what cause it to go bad a lot quicker than clean oil would.

In any case that's a lot of oil to freeze or refrigerate in a home setting. Takes up a lot of room.

5 gallons of oil in your freezer..........not a good plan.

You do not need to use peanut oil.  I haven't used it ever, and I have done many deep fried.....  just gotta watch the temp and take precautions.  You don't mind throwing out cheap oil after a single use.  Not good to buy $50 of oil to cook a turkey, hell that is almost the cost of a KEG of beer !!!  Look at your big box store, Sams or Costco for frying oils.  Watch your cholesterol, folks!!!

You can extend the life of your oil by cooking potatos after the turkey.  They absorb the flavors from the oil.  Salt them fries while they are vulnerable....BAM!!!!

Deep fried turkey kinda breaks up the traditional turkey dinner schedule.  People like to finger-food the turkey.  This works great with french fries or large cut fries.

PLANNING:  18 pound birds or less cook quicker and more consistently.

It is better to do two small birds than one big bird.

I will cook turkeys in roasters, as I have many times.  Less hands on, and you can more accurately predict your serving time, which is important if you have people out shopping, partying, or if your have multiple dishes and PIES cooking.  Electric roasters are outstanding because you can get the heat outside of the house.  I cook turkey in the garage or on the patio.  This frees up the oven for PIES and baking the rolls.

30 people in your house raising hell makes a lot of heat.  Cooking the turkey outside is a good thing!

We did this at at the in laws a couple summers ago.  Set the fryer up in the back yard and did turkey breasts.

It worked pretty well after we got the oil-fed grass fire put out.

The best part was deep frying various things after the turkeys were done.  Apples, onions, etc.

Deep fried smoked turkey isn't bad, but tastes strange.
It is like a drunken bar room brawl of flavors in your mouth.

Of all the presents we got for our wedding our turkey fryer was the best.Been deep frying turkeys for 6 yrs now.Have you ever tried a Deep fried Pork Loin? Season it up good wrap it in bacon and cook to about 160-170.

You get a real thick crust on it, its awsome.

My company used to do a deep fried turkey for holiday dinners - I (and lots of other folks) stopped going to the dinners when they stopped serving fried turkey.  It's damn good.
