I wouldn't think it would damage the unit, as long as there is no melted plastic sticking to it and it gets a good seal.

When I reseal a bag of chips (or a similar bag) I don't let it run it's full cycle. Letting it run it's full cycle will likely burn through.

My Food Saver is fine, & I do that a lot.
