We finally set up the cash desk computer here at work with a minor problem. We keep getting pop ups galore on here. I have installed Mozilla this morning and also spybot search and destroy and adaware. Ran the 2 programs, but we still keep getting pop ups pretty bad.

What else can I use to get rid of these popups?

Are these showing up while surfing the web, or just sitting there working?

You say it's a cash desk computer, does it really even need to touch the Internet?  Seems like a risk.

not set up with the cash drawer, but set up at the desk so we can look up prices without going to the bosses office.
Sorry I wasn't real clear on that.

The one I usually use when all the free ones fail is Stopzilla. You can use it for free for 15 days, so the good thing is you get to see right away if it works, but after 15 days you have to pay the 20.00 fee for one years use. If it works for you then that's a bargain in my opinion. Excellent program...just go to stopzilla.com to download it.

you need to boot into safe mode.

make sure you have the latest updates to spybot, then reboot.

while the system is booting, tap the F8 key repeatedly to get a menu to boot into safe mode.

once it boots up in safe mode, run spybot.

then reboot and go to normal mode.

Given that you stated you're getting popups while no browser is running, we need to look at your system proceses.  Go to a command line (Start  ->  Run...  ->  cmd  ->  Ok).  Once you have a command prompt up, type tasklist and hit enter.  Copy and paste (click once in the upper left of the title bar, choose Edit  ->  Mark, click and drag what you want to copy, and hit enter) your list of running applications so we can take a look at what may be causing the popup nightmare.

I tried to bring this up, it kept telling me that tasklist was not a program on the pc (or something like that)

I did however d/l and install the AVG free and ran it. It found 8 trojan horses and cleaned those up. I just restarted so I will see if that has solved the problem.

yea, that doesnt work with mine either.

You could just right click on the taskbar and choose "task manager"

Agreed, that's the normal way to do it but you can't copy and past from Task Manager (trying to make it easy on MrsGungho).  I wonder if that's only available on XP Pro?  Have to do some digging on that.

So how's it looking with the popups?

been just over 2 hrs since I restarted the pc after running the AVG and not one single popup. Usually I would have seen naked boobies bouncing at me at least 2 or 3 times by now. So AVG worked. Thanks so much guys!

free tool from lavasoft to turn off messenger

you might also install a squared antimalware 2.1  you will have to create a account but its free.  do a complete update and do a full system scan.  if you don't get all the trojans off it will just slowly get worse

E-95   i wasn't aware of tasklist.   that worked on xp pro on my system  thanks for posthing that
