Do you want to use a pic on your computer as you AVATAR? Or do you just want to post you pic here?

I believe he wants a picture from his computer as an avatar.

OP: the image would have to be re sized to make sure it's not to big. There are some folks here who could do it for you without a problem. I'll try to find the "clean your old avatar" thread..

right, that is called an AVATAR. You need to make sure the picture is of the correct dimensions, then it must be up-loaded in your profile.

Hang on and let some folks work up the instructions.

If you look at the top of this page (all the way up and over on the left) you will see your name, then  to the right of that you see the little letter symbol, to the right of that you will see two boxes––one is sight tools, the other is Edit Profile.

Click (left click) on the Edit Profile.

That will take you to your Profile page.

At the bottom of that page, on the left is a box that says up-load Avatar.

If you click on that, and you will see a box that says select file.

Click on that box, and then select the picture you want on your computer.

Then click on submit.

it should up-load that picture as your Avatar.

The picture size for avatars is 175x95 pixels.  If you need it resized just post the picture here and someone will do it.  To post pictures here you can see this thread.

In order for other people to see your pictures they have to be uploaded from your computer to a web site that acts as a host for your pictures on the Internet.  Your computer can't do this by itself.
I use a place called Photobucket.
http://photobucket.com/
http://photobucket.com/about
http://register.photobucket.com/?ref=joinus
After you register there for a free account you can upload pictures from your home computer to their computer, which is visible on the Internet.  You and others can then directly view or hot link to your pictures.
Here's a picture I uploaded to my Photobucket album, both as an address to it, and as an embedded picture here.
http://s967.photobucket.com/albums/ae159/draynes/?action=view&current=1289465992601.jpg

It does take some practice, but Photobucket makes the process as easy as possible, and it's FREE.
