Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File This started life as a complete 8mm mauser that I picked up at a gun shop for $20. It was on a rack marked " for parts only". The gunsmith had quit, and nobody there knew anything about any of the "parts" guns, so to be safe, they were sold as parts. Aside from being loved tenderly by at least one bubba, the only thing I found mechanically wrong was that the magazine follower and spring were missing. I had the idea of building a retro type target rifle in 30-06, but the more I thought about it, the more I didn't know if I could trust the receiver. Thinking back, it probably would have been fine. I ordered the 45acp kit from Rhineland arms and installed it on the action. As I got into the build, I started becoming inspired to keep the rifle ugly and looking pieced together, instead of making it look nice. This may have been helped along by my obsession with the fallout franchise. The front sight started life as a broken front sight assembly off of a high point 9mm carbine that I had from fixing my brother in laws carbine. I just filed the broken part flat and built the front blade assembly from a piece of square tubing with a nut welded to it, a post made from a set screw, and slots that allow the square tubing to slide side to side to adjust windage. The elevation can be adjusted by screwing the front post up or down. This all worked great until I tightened the assembly onto the barrel and the base broke through the holes I drilled and tapped for the screws that he the hood (square tubing) on. The rear sight was just a quick buck horn type sight I made from a piece of angle iron. I had planned on finding a decent peep/target sight for the rear. I have also started working on a scout style rail made from a piece of a broken knights armament hand guard. I'm planning on attaching it to the barrel with scope rings. There are steps in the barrel that are 1" and 3/4", so I'm planning on clamping the rings on the barrel and flattening the part of the ring that would attach to the rail and tapping holes in them to screw the rail to. I still need to find cheap scope rings to do this. I think a trip to the next gun show is in order. I'm thinking about ordering a new front sight from high point and seeing how tall it is, and hopefully being able to use it as is. If not, I'll try to learn from my mistakes and try again with the idea I used last time. I'd still like a peep sight for the rear, but it needs to be cheep, and look cobbled together. I think I'm going to use a cheap red dot sight and build a metal shroud so it looks like the fallout pipe rifle sight with the screws, at least from the outside. I also have an idea for a two point mount for a muzzle device. It'll probably be flash hider or comp for now, but bring back e filing, or If the hpa passes, and I'll either build an ugly can or use oil filters.(for this, I'd prefer oil filters. Lol) The hardest part for me is that I want it to be reliable and fully functional. I'm not 100% happy with how it cycles right now. It doesn't feed well, I think mostly because of the gap created by the locking lugs in the front ring of the receiver. It will feed pretty well with ball ammo, and shutting the bolt quickly, but bobble the bolt at all and it will hang up and not feed. Using my pet 1911 load with 200gr lswc bullets takes a miracle to feed more than a couple in 8 rounds. I'd love to be able to fix that. An action with rear locking lugs wood be perfect, because the barrel could be set back to have the chamber right in front of the magazine. I'd also love to figure out a way to make a sight like I mentioned above with the two screws as aiming points, but I can't think of a way to make it functional. I still have some work to do on it, and hopefully posting on here will give me some motivation. A couple of people expressed interest in seeing this thing, so I figured I'd go ahead and post it up now, and hopefully get some cool ideas and share some experiences. |

I was going to get those ironed out before going too far with the looks. I'm pretty sure this thing will end up with some hose clamps, copper wire and maybe some rawhide thrown in for good measure. Lol |
