So I was chilling out in the library at school today and as I glanced out of the west window I noticed a platoon sized unit walking in line about 300 yards away.  The soldiers were obviously wearing ACUs, K-pots, and carrying M16A2/A3 rifles.  They were walking in a loose formation (big gaggle of soldiers) and sort of flanked my position and took cover behind a knoll and got in the prone position.  My interest was peaked as they all pointed their rifles toward the library I was located in.  At this time they were approximately 150 yards away.

Here is what I have a problem with;
1) I have been in school here for about 1.5 years and never seen this type of drilling on campus.
2) The students and faculty were not notified in advance that there would be 25-35 soldiers carrying M16s and assaulting the school
3) The fuckers were pointing their weapons in the general direction of the buildings
4) They were not wearing MILES gear and they DID NOT have BFA on the M16s
5) I ended up walking to the parking lot as this was going on and another assault team came across the field and they were running and pointing their weapons at ME!  I yelled at them, "DROP YOUR MUZZLES!"

Is it common to run training like this on a non-governmental campus full of students that haven't been notified of such drills?I think this was an extremely poor judgement call to do this in the time we live in.
Edit: Seems that most think this type of training on the main campus, during school hours, and without notification being sent to students is normal.  My mistake.

We had a separate area where we ran missions.  Maybe your university doesn't?

ETA

We would do ruck marches on the bike path with weapons and the students weren't notified.  Never had an issue.

There are pleanty of other more secluded areas that they could have done this training without pointing their M16s at students.  Honestly I don't have a problem with it until they pointed the rifles directly at me as I walked to my car.

No idea then.  It's not something we ever did on the main campus.  The most we did on the main campus was use the football field, and surrounding region, as a staging area.  This would have been back in 2001-2005.

In realistic training, some of them do.

Not always.  We used the rubber ducks and M16A2s with blank adapters depending on what we were doing.

Fuck that noise.

I was permanently at war with our campus hippies, but if that had gone down at my university, I would have called them and quickly assembled a hackey sack game and drum circle in the middle of that field.

Chances are High that they're nothing more then damned dubber ducks for training. And they're probably training there because they don't have elsewhere to train or the STX lane they're doing dictates it.

Either way, I'd confirm that they have "Rifles" before blasting that out.

That is definitely an ROTC unit with rubber ducks. We do the same thing on our campus and people also get butthurt. We do not have the budget to truck our cadets out in the middle of nowhere every time we want to train and urban training is definitely a focus in our mission set. Chill out bro.

I would have hoped the OP would have called the cops and initiated a lock down.  Local police show up in an MRAP and one of the Soldiers says, "Hey, I used to PMCS that thing every Monday, I was wondering who they sold it to."

College ROTC leadership lab, usually held in a more secluded location.  However, we had one incident (early in the morning) where we were running sprints up and down a parking garage with rubber duck M16s and a couple of M60s...somebody called the cops and they responded in force. We started making courtesy calls to the campus PD after that.

I am not seeing anything wrong. I mean how are we supposed to train future leaders to take over local college campuses if we don't practice?

I would point my rubber duck at you too since you probably gave off a hostile vibe.

Side note I have done sim round force on force training on a college campus and it was fucking fun.
