[ARCHIVED THREAD] - .45-70 question (Page 1 of 2)

I am trading in a weatherby .240 for a better 'woods gun' for deer hunting this winter. I am thinking about buying the new Marlin that was released not too long ago.

1. How do you like your's? (if you have a .45-70)
2. How bad does it kick compared to a more common caliber? (like .308 or 30-06, ect)
3. What kind of optic would you mount on it?

1. I don't own one but have shot another members (looked like the one in the picture) and I want one
2. Like a FUCKING MULE, worse then my old .460 Weatherby
3. A very solid, well built one

I would go with a Nikon variable power scope (3-9X40mm). I like to be able to zoom in

45/70 = big boom

When you get it... Immediately get a Limbsaver pad for it

Have you ever shot a 3 1/2" 12ga magnum (or 10ga)? If so, how does it compare to that?

Never shat a 10ga, but IMO worse then a 3.5" mag 12ga.

I have a Marlin 45-70 1895CB.......  It's a nail driver. If you reload, you can load WAY higher then factory. But it will hurt a bit. Like 458 hurt....

I would have to look at my records but I drive a 405g flat point about 2000fps.....

.45-70 loaded with a 520gr cast lead bullet is a pussycat when it comes to recoil.....

.... out of my 13lb Sharps!

Got the fullsize 1895 SS about ten years ago. Most non-specialty factory loads will do the job, but thats not why I got a 45-70. Reload for flame belching bone crushing goodness.  It's plenty accurate too.

I have a marlin 1895SS .45-70.  It has less felt recoil than a 2 3/4" 12GA 1oz slug from an 870.  Feels about the same as an M1 Garand IMO.

I have a Marlin Cowboy in 45-70. Recoil can be stout but it is slow, and not sharp, less than my 458 Win Mag.
I would also advise against running optics on it, as they kill the handiness and balance of the rifle, imho. A peep sight on a lever gun is a beautiful thing though.

One warning though, big bores are addicting. Symptoms of the addiction are very close to BRD, except the cartridges keep getting fatter and longer. You have been warned.

3.5" 12ga mag roughly = a 10ga

That has to be a fun gun to shoot. I want one even more now

I've only shot 45-70 a few times but I would say that it is not any worse than a 12GA with 3.5" shells.

The best way I can describe it is, the Weatherby was a dull, cumulative (well 3 shots cumulative anyway) pain. The 45/70 is a sharp, right now, you know your going to feel it in the morning pain.

In good strong rifles like the No.1 and 1895, the 45/70 can come within 85-90% of a factory .458 Magnum.

2nd from the right with a 270 to the left for size.
If you handload, go for it. I worked my way up from mild to nuclear loads.

Make sure you have PLENTY of eye relief.  I was rudely introduced to a Nikon scope by my 45/70.

The scope that's on it now has 4+ inches of eye relief

It really depends on the shooter's weight, stance, recoil pad, experience, and how they hold the rifle/shotgun.

When I shoot 3.5" mags, I really lean into it and pull that stock tight into my shoulder. The recoil isn't too terribly bad. Don't get me wrong... You still feel it

Now you guys are starting to make me have second thoughts about getting a .45-70    Maybe a new a downy pillow between me and my shoulder.

My 14" Thompson Center Contender pistol in .45-70 kicks like a mule & hurts like hell! After 3 shots it makes you want to cry. After 10 shots you can't hold the gun because you can't feel your hand. And that's with a muzzle tamer & Pachmayr grips on it & wearing Past Recoil Gloves. The tenth round fired through it broke the hammer off even with the frame.

At 100 yards it will slam a full size steel ram silhouette to the ground like nothing you have ever seen!!!! It's almost worth the pain to see what that monster can do!

Oh, and did I say it hurts like hell to shoot it?

So true. While I haven't shot a .45/70 yet, I can recall the first time I shot a 12ga.

The boom was so loud and the kick was more than I ever felt before. I laughed my ass off because it was so much fun. I then shot a few boxes of ammo with a huge grin on my face... Probably like this

I have a Buffalo Classic.  It's light weight and steel buttplate makes shooting it a real experience.

I filled up the buttstock with a couple pounds of lead shot.  It still kicks but not so bad.

I found that pushing the Remington 405 soft nose bullet to about 1600 fps will solve any problem I'm likely to run across here in Monsoon Central without trashing my shoulder.  That goes for the Marlin leverguns too.

Conversely, pushing the Speer 350gr Hot-Cor to 2300 fps causes severe blue shoulder to me and whatever is in front of me falls down and stays there.

Man up and get that 45/70.  You can load it up or down depending on what you're after.

[#27]
I have the 450 Marlin, 45/70 Magnum and the recoild is not bad at all.
10/11/2009 12:38:38 PM EDT
[#28]
I have never felt that the marlin lever guns with 45-70 or 450marlin were kick machines, they were rather pleasant to shoot for being such a large round.   again, you CAN get some serious boom out of them if you reload but most factory will be less than standard 12ga imho.

now.. 458win mag with 510gr soft point... 13rounds and I was DONE.

ETA:  that is a gorgous rifle!

I bought a 45/70 guide gun this year for a deer rifle.

Kick is hard, worse than a 30.06 easily.  Doesn't kick quite as bad as my buddies .450 marlin revolver though.

Very sturdy gun

Very accurate inside 100 yards, honestly haven't shot it past that.

I'm hunting with irons, no optics.
All in all, seems like it would kill anything in it's path with easy. I still may just go hunt with an AR though...

You guys are pussies...I can shoot a .45-70 Marlin guide gun all day and not be even remotely sore. Same as .30-06 for recoil. Don't be talked out of an awesome caliber because a few girly men can't handle it.
10/11/2009 12:51:00 PM EDT
[#31]
Shooting it from your shoulder in a hunting situation shouldn't be a problem.  Shooting a box of ammo while sitting at a bench will.

If your eyes are good (young) use iron sights, its not a 400 yard gun.

I can shoot it all day as well, but it definitely kicks harder than a 30.06, atleast in my opinion.

I have a Ruger No.1 in 45-70 and load 405gr FP's @ 1750fps. very accurate @ 100yds, under an inch without trying too hard.

Yea it has some recoil but not that bad. Way less than my No.1 in 375 H&H

I bought mine from a buddy that did IHMSA shooting. He broke / sprained his wrist and wouldn't shoot it anymore.

ETA: That's a .223 round and a .45-70 round for reference.

.45/70 is a wristbreaker in a handgun.  Out of a rifle, it's a shoulderbreaker.

I was thinking about this last night.  Finally got the cast off my right arm/wrist.  I'm going to have to sell my .45/70 stuff now.  After my accident over the summer, there's no way I'll ever be able to shoot that heavy of a round again.

The hardest kicking gun I own is my Benelli M1 Super 90 with 1 ounze slugs. Kicks harder than my .45-70 or M44 7.62x54R by far. 45-70 really is like shooting an M1 garand, just a gentle push rather than teeth rattling recoil.

I have/had numerous 45-70s over the years, its a great cartridge.
Recoil can range from mild to knock the fillings right out of your teeth just depends what you put in it.
I like iron sights on a Levergun but have used a Vari X 2 1X4 power and liked it well. (That scope on a shorter length Levergun is very fast)

The point of my post was to say "If anyone has a gun that they are willing to let me shoot and furnish the ammo, I'd do it."

I've got an H&R Buffalo Rifle. The only reason I don't shoot it more often is the cost of ammo.

Edit:  I've got H&Rs in 10g, 12g, 30-30, 45-70, 12g slug, and 500 S&W. The 500 S&W does jump just a tad when you pull the trigger, the rest are pussy cats conpared to it.
