Without more information, it is tough to say if you could have been successful.  Without trying, you will never know.

4-wheel drive or offroading books and websites often have information about getting unstuck.

Did that once while deer hunting, in my company van, had to get a tow too.

I know I scared off all the deer too, nobody was very happy with me that opening day, myself included.

Uhhh,..... you've never pulled a truck out of the mud???

edited to add:

Ideally you can use tow straps or chains and another truck

If thats not possible, you can dig out or if you have access to a winch (even something like a hi-lift jack is good)

This is exactly why i keep a hilift and two straps in my truck at all times.

It's kinda like being stuck in snow.  You just rock it back and forth, building momentum.

You could have left it there until the mud dried up and then just drove it out

Do NOT use a chain! That can easily get someone hurt or killed.

easy....pile rocks/sticks/branches in front&behind the drive wheels and let out the air in the tires to the point where it's pretty flat (10-15psi).  then have some guys get behind to help push while you're gunning the pedal---it should work...if not then get some recover straps w/o the hooks, and pull that sucker out---most like the first plan would work out before the straps come in.

I saw a van that was barely stuck, the guy backed out of a driveway and wound up with one wheel in deep mud and the other had some support.  He did not know how to drive it since he could have lightly stepped on the brake so some power went to the wheel with traction, but instead he messed around with a rope so I could gently tug him forward.  If it was not so muddy behind the van I most likely could have pushed him out.

Since it was a business van he would not let me drive it out and the guy would not listen to me so I could explain how he could modulate the brake pedal and gas pedal and drive himself out.

Overall, you can generally get stuff out but going the tow truck route can save some hassle, keep folks from doing dumb things and getting injured, and maybe making things worse.

A few weeks back someone got thier truck stuck in a muddy field and it most likely is still accessable if you wish to go find it.

And while there are better things to use than chain for getting vehicles out, chain has some definate ability and I always keep some around and have used it to get myself pulled out many a time.  You just don't shock load a chain.
