Yeah, it was probably a bad idea. Even if it wasnt out and out, it was shady. It was 4 years ago but I still feel like a tool. I'm just gonna remove this and move on, thanks for the wake up call guys. Alot has changed since then, but I guess I still have some room to grow a little.

Is robbing a bank considered stealing or is it just kind of a loan that isn't going to get paid back? ![]() ![]() You didn't read his post at all, did you? Sounds fine to me. No one lost anything. The employees that handled the merchandise at Walmart get paid by the hour, so there's no increase in cost to Walmart. |
| on a scale of 1 to 100...1 being jacking a piece of gum from the candy aisle and 100 being racial genocide I will give you a -5.....like you said no money was really lost...the broken dingus went back to the company...and your kid brother got a new one that the company probably would have sent to him to replace the broke one (or repaired). And you saved the shipping and aggravation of having to wait for them to send out a good machine to replace their crapped out model. |

Sure I felt a little shady about it all, but since nobody was losing money, and we still got what we paid for, I felt okay about it. Like I said, I dont think I would do it again, but at the time...ehhh.. |

I think its technically wrong. Does it earn you shitbag status? No, of course not.
On a side note - Given all the justification you just crammed into 7 or so paragraphs, it seems you've already failed the "look yourself in the mirror" test. I don't think it really matters what anyone else says at this point - you seem to know (or at least worry) it was less than honest. |

Did you get a "free" pressure washer too? Um no. That guy walked out with a pressure washer that he absolutely did not pay for. Now If I said we walked in with a broken Xbox, set it on the floor by the service desk, and walked back to the game aisle, took an Xbox and walked out with it, that would be the same as pressure washer guy. |

That is dishonest. I used to bust people for similar scams in my last job. How is it a scam? Who lost a penny? Walmart lost money, in dealing with the RMA, which is expensive (for walmart). MS used to do it right, provide shipping boxes that you just shove the xbox in when you report the RROD, and pick it up via UPS, then return your console some time later, not sure what they do now. Anyone who bought a 360 is a sucker, and deserves what they get though. "You can't cheat an honest man." but I don't see any honest men in this story. ETA: I should ask, was it originally purchased from walmart? IMO that would shift things in the poster's favor. |

I was only home for a week or so, and my brother is too young to be able to take his Xbox to the post office, box it up, mail it off, fill out warranty forms etc. I certainly didnt have time for that stuff either. Yet you had time to do research, make three trips to Walmart, and the time to swap the serial numbers between two XBoxs. We went to Walmart and bought a new Xbox console. Came home, took the "serial number sticker" off of the new one, and replaced it with the one off of the old one (the broken one). I then took the broken Xbox back to Walmart, explained that it was not working, and that I wanted a refund.

Is robbing a bank considered stealing or is it just kind of a loan that isn't going to get paid back? ![]() ![]() Did you read the thread? Obviously not. Nobody took anything they did not pay for Well, it's not WalMarts responsiblility to fix every broken item that they sell after a certain date, 30, 60 or 90 days. Walmart lost a perfectly good unit, for which they didn't receive any money for, but they did receive a broken unit, through no fault of their own and they now have to pay to ship that broken unit back to MS, which isn't their responsibility in the first place and that will cost them money. So they have lost out. You and your kid brother knew what needed to be done, but were either unable to, or too lazy to, ship it back via the proper channels. You then went down to a retailer and basically stole a good unit from them, replacing it with a broken unit and leaving s/h up to them in order to recoup their money. What if that unit goes missing, gets lost on the way back to them, etc? You just assume that MS will receive it lickety-split. Chris |
|
You screwed walmart for MS's piece of shit xbox. Walmart sold you a perfectly good one. You gave them back a different broken one and they refunded your money. Games are for retarded sissies. Teach your lil brother how to shoot, hunt, fish, fight, drink beer and and chase pussy like a man. |

fuck wal mart.
I've done the 'buy a new one and return th eold one in the new box' a couple of times becasue they were assholes about refunds/returns. I paid for 1 unit and I expect to have at least 1 unit that works- and fuck your 'store policy' that only emplyees know about that says some items have a 2 week return period. They didn't tell me about 'special rules' when I bought it, and they didn't put any notice on the receipt- so fuck 'em. If you sell a crappy product- you need to accept any an all returns on it- if you don't want to honor that- don't sell cheap shit!!! |

Eventually walmart might lose money and come back after you. Im not 100% sure but electronics like that also keep the serial # embedded into a EEPROM chip somewhere inside. If MS gets it back and matches up the serial # to the outside one and find sout its different you might be getting a call from walmart. Im neutral about it. Just be careful. |

No, you committed fraud. AT THE TIME of your actions, you had paid money for a product that had been used by you, which YOU may have broken (OK, not likely given the 360 problems), but which was NO LONGER that retailer's problem. YOU used false pretenses to switch your defective product for a brand new one. Just because you paid full freight one time some months ago for a 360 does not entitle you to a brand new one whenever your current one wears out, fucks up, or whatever. Its fraud and you behaved like a shit bag lacking the most basic sort of moral fiber. |

Okay but see, I think that if I were to lets say buy a paintball gun, take it out and use it with my buddies a few times, then return it and get my money back or get a fresh new gun, that is wrong. If they gun breaks though, and the store refuses to take it back, and you buy a new one and swap them out, is that as wrong? In a way yes, which is why I stated in the OP that I regretted it. But at the same time, is it theft? I paid for ONE working item and ended up with ONE working item. I know it was shady and I wish I hadnt, but is it really out and out theft? Thats the debate Im trying to settle here. |

You are a fraud and a thief, and you have taught your brother to be a scheming thief, yeah, good on you alright. The Return authorization takes about two minutes to get, you have your choice of printing a shipping label or having one sent to you, literally two minutes, if you have to find the information on the web maybe ten. It takes about three minutes to wrap the console up in some newspaper or bubblewrap or peanuts or whatever crap you have laying around from the other crap you order on the net. Then you take maybe half an hour driving to the post office to send it off postage paid. Less than a week later a spiffy fixed Xbox shows up at the doorstep. The entire process takes less time and effort than finding the electronics clerk with the key. I just went through the process this weekend, it was simple and easy, and it cost me nothing. What you did was not just getting a jump on the process, you purposefully returned a broken piece of equipment, and lied and said it was the same one you bought when you knew good and well that the item you bought was at home with your little brother. What do you think is going to happen once Microsoft opens that machine up to fix it and see that the serial numbers inside don't match the outside? Walmart will not get a replacement, so they are screwed out of the cost of an Xbox. We may not like Walmart, but not liking a business does not make it OK to steal from them, and that is what you did. Maybe one day you and your brother will move up to more complex operations, maybe you guys can sell fake condos to old people in NYC? Sounds like a fun project for Christmas break. |

I used magic to pull the quotes that show there was no lack of time for you to do the right thing and return the Xbox for repair like an honest person would have done.
Your borher paid for Xbox #123, you swapped the serial number with Xbox #456. Returned #123 and got your money back. Walmart/Microsoft have #123 you have #456 that you did not pay for. XBox #456 has not been paid for You stole #456. Thief. |

The actis no different thanbuying something at a garage sale for 50 cents and returning it to Walmart for the $24.97 they sell it for. If you have to deceive a business to get your way it's wrong, even if it is a business you don't like. |
