so i just bought a 308 ar-10. The manufacture recommends 168 gr bullets. being that it was an indoor range and i just wanted to see if the rifle functioned fine the cheapest stuff i could fine was a box of XM80CL
I know XM80 was military round but wasn't sure of the cl. So i asked the guy who said he doesn't know. Called another guy over he wasn't sure either so he grabbed a magnet and stuck it to the box. The magnet stuck to the box.
then he said "..AP......"
Now i didn't want to argue with the guy but isn't AP 308 ammo banned? 308 pistols aren't that uncommon these days.
But i know that bimetal bullets will stick to a magnet (wolf, tula) but I didn't think federal used bimetal bullets, only steel crap ammo had bimetal bullets or so i thought.

Anyone care to shed some light on this?

It's a copper-clad mild steel jacket.

Damn the magnet crap pisses me off. I'm an RO at a range and we had to get strict with checking peoples ammo because we had a drum puncture from green tip and from steel core 7.62x54R and so several of the RO's started breaking out magnets and telling people they could not shoot wolf. I and others set them straight. But not before pissing off several customers.

tag for interest.  PSA has had this for 11.99 per box so I picked up some to shoot though my standard M1A.
