So for the past 5 years I've enjoyed my companies flex schedule, I work four 9 hour days, then have Friday off - the following week I work four 9 hour days and an 8 hour Friday. Thus getting 80 hours total for two weeks. Its great.

Found out yesterday they are changing the policy and I now have to choose  from these options:

1 - Standard five day work week, 8 hours per day

2 - Four 10 hour days, Friday off. Following week Five 8 hour days

3 - Four 9 hour days, work 4 hours every Friday

I am a desk jockey (GIS Specialist) and have a 30 minute commute each way to work. Not sure if I can handle 10 hours in the cube....

Which would you choose?

I do 4 ten hour days followed by 8 hours of overtime on friday!

I also have a 30 minute commute no traffic!

Option 2.

Easily 3.

The Friday OT would be nice!

I would take any of those, 5x10's get old after a few years.

You are "benefiting" from federal regulations.  Even though you and your company liked the previous arrangement, the government says you can't work over 40 without overtime.  Bye bye really neat schedule.

#2, but if you really can't stand 10's, #3.  Can you give one schedule a try and then switch if it doesn't work out for you?

Exactly what prompted the change. Some changes internally on the way we are billed/paid etc.

Sort of, we can make the schedule change twice per year.

I would choose option 3, simply because I like a consistent, structured schedule. Alternating hours and days every week would drive me crazy.

are you salary or hourly employee?

4 10s

My wife loves her 4 tens, she gets weds. off, so it is like two short work weeks of 2 days. I am like you, don't know if I could do 10 hours a day.

Hourly. But restricted from working OT. I get the exact same paycheck every two weeks. Hourly but without any of the benefits of hourly, and get none of the salaried benefits either (bonuses, 9/80 schedule etc)

Is there any possibility of teleworking on Fridays? Option 1 or 3 with Fridays at home would be sweet.

Just curious where you're working at..I'm now in the GPS world with a company in Raleigh.

Possibly. I was actually going to speak with my boss on that, I've worked from home on several occasions. Everything we do is remotely accessed via Citrix.

Over 40 hours in one week is overtime per federal regs.  It's been that way for eons, nothing new.  Your payroll department screwed up thinking they could get around this.

A straight 4-10's would be best, but of the three options, definitely option 3.  I couldn't stand option 2 with the different hours/days.

+1

Plus an average of 3 weekends a month

Option 2. I did a schedule where i had a short Friday and it sucked. Also had the 15 mile, 35 minute commute with horrid traffic. The short Friday( lees production time, and more traffic) will suck even further, and you may catch more traffic on the way home. I like the every other Friday off as you get 2 3day weekends.

And the survey says..................................Option #2.

I'd do the 4 tens for the three day every other weekend, myself.

Strange, I am myownself a fed.gov employee (DoD civilian) and I've been working the OPs flex schedule for years.

Number 2, and long the weekends you have become accustomed to, remain.  Also if you can do 9 you can do 10.

Def leaning towards option #2 at this point

Option 3, I have that now when stateside.  Its extremely nice and its get you out of bed on Friday.

I gotta go with option 1.

Long week, short week then having to come in for 4 hours would piss me off.

At least with option 1 you can schedule stuff 6 months down the road without having to figure out if it's on your 9 hour week or 8.

I heart 4 10s because of the extra day off and less commuting.

Quit yer whining about not being able to handle a long day

My wife had a commute that varies from 1 to 3 hours each way depending on traffic. On average she starts work at 6am and finishes at 6pm 5 days a week plus spends an average of 2 more hours a day on phone calls for a total of 14 hours a day. A lof of the time she has important deadlines to meet so she works a bunch on the weekend too. She is salaried so no overtime.

What kind of GIS work are you doing?

I work GIS, but i am in the field, and i travel so my work week is usually 10-12 hours 6 days a week

Most is behind the desk, some is field work.

The guys that process all of our data sit in a cubical 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I visited their office once and it was like walking into a zombie movie

Option #2.  That every other Friday off is great for getting chores or shopping done around town when everyone else is at work, and it cuts your commuting costs when you're not going to the office one day every pay period.
4/11/2012 9:25:48 AM EDT

Couple of companies I worked for last year expected 5 10 hour days and 6 hours on Saturday all for the bargain of being paid for 40 hours/week.  "Oh don't worry, we will make it up to you", "You should be happy, most people can't find a job these days"

...and my favorite "Oh, I don't know why your check didn't clear, I will have to have a talk with the office girl. We will just put last weeks pay on next weeks paycheck if it don't clear by tuesday". Not kidding.

ITT: Americans discuss whether 10 hours is too much to work in a day. Because they need that extra time to bitch on the internets about jobs being sent overseas.

Where do you work at and what do you do?  I live in NC and in the job market, currently working, but looking.

Option 3.  I used to have flex scheduling and when working 10 hour shifts, I was so fried by Friday (no pun intended, but I'll live with it) that I wasted most of the day.  When I worked 9 hours, I would go until around 1pm Thursday of the second week, and be off Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  Once I got maxed out and had to use 18 hours of vacation time per month or loose it, I was off Wednesday at 1pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and would still be maxed out...  It was great.  Once in a while when there was a week with a holiday, I would be off for around 8-9 days in a row, and still be maxed out...

But the flip side was that in nearly 25 years, I only earned 16 hours of overtime pay.

Four tens is the tits for several reasons. Going to work an hour early and leaving an hour late can mean less traffic depending where you live. Also, 3day weekends are awesome.
