At our shop we have a pc that runs windows, and an auto manufacturer's propietary software. It's hooked up to a inkjet printer by the cable. We recently got a laptop from another auto manufacturer that's obviously windows based, but runs NOTHING but the manufacturer's installed software. By that I mean there's no access to any other installed software. No access to the control panel, etc. It's hooked up to a laser printer by wireless. No physical connection. The printer is a HP, and does have a port (parallel?/serial? Has pins, it's not a USB port) that's not used. Space is limited and having 2 printers is pointless. My question: If I hook up the laser printer to the pc via a cable to the pc, would the laptop still print to the printer ok via the wireless connection? If so, other than drivers for the pc for the printer, is there anything else I'd need to do? TIA |
Sounds like he's not trying to reconfigure the laptop but to hook the other PC directly into the printer. Though you will need admin rights on that other PC. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with both at the same time, printers are designed to spool jobs. |
That's correct. There's no problem with admin access to the PC. Other than being tied into the company's network for the internet access, it's a stand alone unit. I have to go into it occasionally and reset things because someone messes around with the settings, downloads garbage, too much music, etc. Believe it or not, I'm the most computer savvy person at work. I setup my own computers at home, often by trial error method I was just looking for some assurance that if I hooked up the laser printer to the PC by a cable that it would still work via the wireless connection from the laptop. BTW, the laptop is also setup completely wireless to the DSL modem on a dedicated DSL line, seperate from the PC's connection to the companies network DSL line (this is small auto dealer). |
